Buffalo bay report

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

We are heading to buffalo bay in two weeks and were wondering with the cold start to the year, has anyone been out on the bar looking around yet?

I don't know where they have been fishing but last week I heard a couple of guys say it was as good as it gets in Buffalo.

Anyone been fishing up in the Bay lately? Also, where is the best place to buy frozen shiners? Thanks for your help.

If you guys make it to Buffalo send back some reports, my boat is currently getting the shifter cable looked at, hopefully it will make it out of the shop for next weekend, if it does, I'll be up there.

I talked to a friend that has a seasonal camper up there yesterday and he says it's been alright, he tends to fish the west shore, finger and occasionally the sandbar.

Free fishing weekend this weekend in Manitoba, I would think the resort should have some good info on where people found fish.

The Marina should have frozen shiners, otherwise I would think the bait shops in Warroad will have some too.

Good luck!

Mike

I was out a couple evenings last week and did very well right in front of the marina and out on the south end of the bar. Saturday there were 100 boats out on the bar but fishing had slowed a lot, tried a few spots and caught a few but not much. Didn't make it out today.

  • 2 weeks later...

I haven't been able to get out for awhile. Any new reports? Hoping to get out this week or weekend, where's the first place to try, what's been hot?

Buddy,

We made it up on Saturday, didn't get to fishing until 2:30 - 3 in the afternoon, waves were rolling pretty good, not many boats out. We run downriggers because of the wave action and roughness, 3 of us ended up keeping 12 fish for afternoon / evening run, threw back many other smaller fish which I would have kept but they were looking for more 18 - 20 inchers, fished anywhere from 16 - 22 FOW.

Sunday we left the downriggers behind and shot out to Paradise, drifted from 8 - 4 FOW, caught one small walleye, second drift produced nothing but a couple of snags so we moved out about 1/2 way up the Sandbar. Drifted from 7 FOW out to 15 or so on the west side of the Sandbar, 1st drift produced nothing, changed direction and got a little closer to where I wanted to be and we had 3 fish on at the same time on the second drift. I grabbed the marker buoy and threw it out, turned around and set the anchor and the rain came pouring down! We gave it some time but it just kept on raining so we pulled up anchor and headed for the dock, I felt like a little kid getting taken away from his favorite toy!!

Oh well, we'll save it for another day.

There were 3 boats on the end of the Sandbar on Saturday evening and a few boats east of Buffalo Point, also had some friends fishing up there Friday, Saturday and Sunday, they kept 8 on Friday and I believe another 8 on Saturday, they didn't fish Sunday because of the weather.

Can't really say there was a pattern for anything, everything got bit.

Good luck!

Mike

Thanks for the report Mike. If the weather cooperates I might be able to get out tomorrow afternoon. I've got some different downrigger equipment on my boat so I might go try that out. Probably go out on the east side of the sandbar and try some different depths.

I was out Tuesday afternoon/evening. Tried south end of the bar and got a couple small ones, did some experimenting with my downriggers out in 30 feet towards 16 mile reef and picked up a few, then finished at the north end of the bar and got a few more. It looked like other boats were doing a lot better than me at the north end, hate when that happens! It did look like the north end was probably the best place to be. I'll have to try again this weekend.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
