Blackduck Fishing Reports by Dunrovin Resort

Recommended Posts

Hello Blackduck Lake Fans!

As we get going, the most current reports will be lower down or use the highest number to the right of this post and click on it.

Blackduck has a good solid 9" of ice now. And only 2" of snow at most. People started driving 4 wheelers out last weekend.

Today is a good day, because we got our first drop down ice house out onto the lake for the season! We've been able to find some Jumbo perch in about 10' of water.

Over the weekend people were seeing the fish, but just had a hard time getting them to bite, because of the strong cold front that pushed through.

We are hoping to start getting on them today! We will keep you posted!

If you have questions or need a new fishing report just post it here and we will get you an answer.

We are now up to 11" of ice. We've seen some perch today, along with northerns... Still waiting for the eye's to turn on.

Weekend Update! The ice stayed about the same over the weekend. But with cooler temps forecasted for this week, we should be driving on by next weekend! Friday was a good day bite, and Saturday the perch were biting all day long with the front moving in. We've seen just about every species of fish caught this weekend, including an eelpout! Guys have been fishing in 10' of water, just on the edge of the weedline, with fat heads & crappie minnows. A couple crappies were caught in the deeper water.

I will be coming up to the Blackduck area over Christmas. (future mother in law lives just out of town). I've never fished the lake but I'm bringing my portable and wheeler up. Plan on trying Blackduck lake so if you have any freebie advice that would be great. Would like to target some walleyes but perch are great also. And thanks for the report. I'm fired up for some fishing. Happy Holidays.

Ice update... Blackduck still has about 10-11" of ice. We havent' made any real progress on thickness this week, but at least we've held steady! We were hoping to be driving out trucks this weekend, but we are NOT recommending it at this point! Fishing has also stayed the same, with perch, northerns & a few walleye being caught during daylight hours, the bite has pretty much shut down at night, but you never know, that could change anytime!

Well, Larry just got done drilling holes to measure the ice... There's 12-14" of good solid ice. Closer to shore it's 12 & out further its 14". People have started driving out cars, jeeps, and 1/2 ton trucks. We have about 2-3" of snow, so people are able to get around easily. The perch bite has been steady in about 10' of water. We are also seeing some at 15-18' as well. Some of our guests said they missed a few walleye this morning. Most people are using a jig and a minnow, with some dead sticking. The weather seems to be holding steady for the next week or more so the bite should continue to be pretty good.

Well, people have been driving out 1/2 ton trucks all weekend on Blackduck. The fishing has been good for our guests! They have caught a wide varitey of fish this weekend, the picture below was just a 1/2 days catch. The other picture is of a really nice 38" Northern caught out by North Point. People are still fishing in about 10' of water.

The walleye bite was a little bit slower this week, we did have somone come in with 1 real nice eye! The big northerns have been biting good. The perch bite has been decent, having to weed through some of the smaller ones.

Today we had some guys get on the Big Crappies! They were 14" slabs. They were fishing in 20' of water, so down deep.

We'll have to see how this storm front rolls through & what it'll do to the bite. As of now we are hearing 5-8" of snow, with some freezing rain before.

Here's a pic of the crappies from today.... Happy fishing & drive safe! [(Note: Please read forum policy for posting photos)full-42938-28721-hjkh.jpg

Hello Fishermen & Snowmobilers!

Well, we ended up getting about 8" of wonderful snow out of this last storm. For our snowmobilers, this is great news! As the trails are ripe for riding! For our fishermen, Larry has started plowing out roads to get ya to the best fishing spots!

Fishing: We have had some people in our sleeper houses that are doing pretty good. They have been catching a variety of fish. But we were pleased to hear this morning that the walleyes have been biting in the evening. There's also been some jumbo perch along with some big northerns. They've been in 9-12 fow. They are reporting about 2 feet of ice.

Well, Snowmobilers have having a blast with all this snow! We ended up getting another 3 good inches yesterday! The trails right outside our door are groomed! We are closely watching Sunday's storm. Right now they are predicting 8-12" for us! With another potential big storm the Feb 16th, but that's a way off yet. Fishing slowed down quite a bit with this last cold front that pushed through, but on the flip side, our ice is in great shape! We did have some of our guys get a couple walleye & 1 huge crappie! They couldnt get over the size! Most people are still fishing in 10-12 fow, they are using just about every kind of lure & bait to get the fish to bite. Hopefully this weekend we'll have some great pics of more fish! Happy Trails & Happy Fishin'!

Blackduck Lake ended up getting about 8-9" of fresh powder! We had some new to Dunrovin snowmobiliers in this weekend, they said that our trails are in alot better condition than where they normally go. :-) There's not as much traffic, our main traffic is fishermen, because of the lake! So I would like to encourage snowmobilers to consider the Blackduck area, for their next trip! Fishing slowed down a bit again with the storm front pushing through. People were fishing in 10-12 fow, the walleye seemed to bite best around 5pm. There was a real nice 30" northern caught during the day. Larry will continue to plow the roads out to the best spots on the lake. I gotta say, he's got his work cut out for him today! :-)

GOOD NEWS!!! We finally have something awesome to write about on Blackduck Lake! :-) Larry plowed out to a tough place to get to & it has paid off! He's finally on the Jumbo Perch! it's been a tough winter for the perch, but March has proven once again to be the best month for those Jumbo's! We are the only people plowed out to that area, and plowing is a tough task right now! We still have 1 cabin left for this weekend if anyone is interested! 218.835.7759

Ice Fishing 101...

Note to ALL fishermen!!!! PLEASE do us all a favor & don't drill holes on the roads! Why you may ask?!?! Someone last night drilled 1 hole on our road. As of this morning there was 12" of water flooding the road! Because of all the weight of the snow on the lake, just 1 hole flooded 100' of the road & made it impassable for everyone else. People who fish after you, thank you for not drilling on roads & leaving a good road for them to drive safely on!

On another note, Larry has a new road plowed out to the crappie hole! :-) We haven't heard how they did tonight yet there, but the reports are good on the perch, at the perch hole! :-)

Well folks, Blackduck lake has a couple inches of snow with 6-8" of frozen slush under that, with at least 2 feet of ice under that! So if anyone wants to get some ice fishing in yet... There's still time! We have't seen alot of people out fishing, but if we have ice, why not fish it?! I'd say that's making the best of our situation! We are driving 4 wheelers or snowmobiles out.

Well, opener has been challenging, but to those few faithful it's really starting to pay off! We have already seen 4 walleye caught by 1 family that ranged from 18-21". We do have cabins open if anyone is interested in staying at our resort! We have about 400' of open water infront of our resort on the north shores of Blackduck Lake. Blackduck is Ice off! :-) We are so excited to see it go! Here at Dunrovin Resort, we were able to get our dock in, so we are ready to fish! I heard tonight that the public access didn't have the dock in yet, hopefully they'll get theirs in soon too!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
