Navionics app for Android/iphone - ice fishing GPS

It is almost identical on iPhone and Android.

I'd say this app is probably my favorite and was also concerned it would not be as good on android but found it's equal.

The battery drain problem can be dealt with cheaply and easily. Get a Jackery Bar from Amazon.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AAP2U4Y/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

If you're link shy, go to Amazon and type in Jackery Bar.

When I bought mine this summer, it was $10. They must have proven out, because they're $30 now. I can get 3 full charges off mine, and it's about the size of a couple packs of trident. All you gotta do to recharge it is plug it into a USB for a few hours. Bring your USB power cord for your phone and you're good to go all day. Get a USB adapter for your truck cig lighter and you can charge it anywhere.

I have an S5 with Navionics. I searched for it just now in the Play store and the version I have installed was the 9th result (it's called Boating US&Canada). Make sure you're searching under the "apps" tab.

Thanks Hollywood_pete. I actually was able to download it last night. Never came up the first 3 days. I had already purchased in the past and the Playstore recognized it. Guessing it was just an update or some glitch. Ready to go now. Ice on the ponds this morning!

I snap my phone into a holder on my storage box that sits between the seats of my clam. in the box is a battery for running lights, and I also have a 3 port cigarette type 12V receptacle. I can charge my phone off the battery if needed and have GPS and navionics both on all day long. I originally put the mount in so I can watch movies or football/hockey on my phone while ice fishing, but its really nice for running the lake maps as well.

I guesse im the onley one that really dont care of for the app, I prefer my H2oc and lake master chip, i get far more details onthe hand held, better resolution and can zoom in farther to pick key depth humps that the fone app dosent allow, just my 2 cents, this was last year tho maybe todays version is better but i keep updating it.

I agree, the chip on a standalone handheld GPS is better -- waterproof, no issues with battery life, zooms better, etc. But dollar-for-dollar, the phone app is pretty nice. The fact that the phone has a GPS built in and everyone already has a phone makes it a good buy for most folks.

At $15 or so, compared to a $200+ handheld GPS and the latest $100 map card, it's hard to beat. That being said, the cards can be found for $40 or $50 if you find one that's a year or two old (that's what I did with my garmin GPS).

Best is to have both.

I looked up Navionics in my apps for an I5 and all I get for search results is the hiking version...any other suggestions?

I believe the boating app is temporarily pulled from the App store during to issues with some sort of compatibility. Hope it is resolved in time for ice fishing season.

+2. Is the app worth $10? Absolutely! I use it most often when I'm pre-planning.

However, I used it solely as my guidance for a half of a season (after my H2O died) and MY EXPERIENCE is that it is highly inaccurate anywhere other than ML.

I now have a Garmin 62 with the LM chip and never bother with the app once I'm on the ice. Just my 2c

  • 2 weeks later...

I think they pulled this app out of the Google Play store. I want to buy it but both the US and US Canada boating apps are no longer returned in search results. For giggles I checked the Apple app store and it is still there, not sure if there is a problem for the android version.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
