Fishing was good today but the catching was slow.. Looked around a lot and decent schools of fish were difficult to locate.. I'd say we got around 20 fish but only 6 pretty decent keepers.. Good for a meal! A day or two of stable wind and weather should set the fish up a little better.. May even be better this afternoon? Try again tomorrow.

Fishing was better today.. pretty decent really.. fish schooled up a little better and more aggressive! Probably caught 30 ish but the average size was a little better as well! Got a 23" the rest were under 18.. Full of minnows! Casey's Crawlers were extremely large and lively! Let me know if you need any.. Still lots on hand! 218 753 4510.

There are still a ton of fish being caught out on the lake and some very nice ones! Just bounce around reefs until you find them.. Still beautiful fresh lively Casey's Crawlers availaible. Call me direct (218)750-4510 or Try Shamrock Marina, Fortune Bay Marina, Spirit of the Wilderness in Ely(limited supply), or Skube's in Ely (limited supply).. ASK FOR CASEY'S CRAWLERS and make sure you get the best! Or ask your favorite bait shop to keep them on hand!

Casey - thanks again for the great outing last Thursday for my wife, son and I. Took us a bit to find them, but patience paid off yet again. Those crawlers are the ticket as well. Mine are still very lively in the fridge after 2 weeks. I lost a heavy one on Sunday morning, but she is still swimming out there.... grin Cya on the lake !

Casey has it right. Get out to Big Bay (I can't find 'em close to home in Frazer for now), dangle half of those fat crawlers (he told you where to get 'em) around a hump until you find them. Best July fishing ever- and this morning was maybe a best AM ever. Can't believe it with this calm, warm weather.

Isn't west end more of a leech bite anyway, isn't it? I've rarely been able to fish crawlers due to bluegill and perch tearing them up.

Twice the other weekend I went out drifting Lindy's for walleye in 20-30 feet just off the bottom. Both times I used leaches and both times I was either pulling up perch from the bottom or panfish. They are like 18 year old boys - willing to go after anything with a pulse.

My point is that leeches seem to be more durable than crawlers when perch/bluegills are encountered.

My group did very well on Wed morning.. I've been camping since with barely any fishing frown smallies and little sunnys for my son and his new rod and then he said dad... let's go catch bigger fish.. so we went and got a couple slot walleyes... then he said let's go get ice cream, so off to Moosebirds we go! Well.. you get the idea.. how can kids swim so long without wrinkling up to nothing? he should look like a pug... back out on east end tomorrow...

Fishing has still been hot and so has the weather!!! Caught a huge bluegill out walleye fishing today.. A first for me on an East End reef.. Some smallies and lots of walleyes. Quite a bit of sorting through small fish but we did get some nice ones and a 21 incher mixed in... Crawlers Crawlers Crawlers.. Even the bass liked them! Fresh shipment of Casey's Crawlers leaving Canada tomorrow so there will be no shortage of great bait.. Give me a call and I can set you up!

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
    • Brianf.
Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
