Just announced today, 05/04/2012, the law requiring boats to display the Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Rules decal has been repealed. This means that boaters no longer need the AIS decal on their boat.

Perfect timing.. just put it on the boat today. Oh well, its staying on and I'm going fishing tomorrow.

Also means double the fines and an online course for weeds.

I was fine with my decal but now we will have to take an online course so we do not have to have the AIS decal. Not much if anything gained at all.

What a total waste of close to a million dollars for the AIS decals and now one can throw them away. The we will print up a new batch of AIS decals for the online requirments. This is now out of control.

+1. I had a problem with it from the start. I dont know how this law ever even looked good on paper. It is just so wrong in so many ways.

This should be on the Open Water page as well, I think more would see it there. Oh Yeah! Awesome!I hated this law.

You will more than likely hate even more all the new laws that will take effect in the upcoming years. Any money says that when they realize noone is taking the online test, a fine will be added to get people to comply. It will only get worse.

Hmmmmmmm maybe they read all those posts that stated a sticker was a waste of time and would do nothing ?

Now we have a sticker and a test to pass in order to get the sticker.....

Gee maybe we need take tests in order to purchase a fishing or hunting license ? Laws change every year we should be required to pass a test to prove we understand the laws. Right ?

So while we are having to take tests in order to earn a sticker to place on our boat so we can fish after having paid all of the taxes and fees required by the state it makes me wonder why those who vote them in do not have to provide a form of I.D.

Sorry to vent but agreed more laws for the legal. They pay the illegal skate.

I agree and it is going to only get worse. Sad deal for all. They need to find a solution to kill off all the AIS and I am sure that is close to impossible without hurting the other species of fish in the lakes and rivers.

It is sure funny how quick the legis. can pass a law like this. They can not agree on anything else and have to go into extra sessions.

did they decide to raise the licsense fee before or after they realized that the sticker was a mistake???? too bad we dont do like a carpenter does measure twice cut once!!!!!!!!!!!

my understanding is that none of the resident fishing licence fees goes to the AIS program, but $5 of the non-resident licence does. the fees for the new licence fees dont go into effect till next year. good luck.

either way its a shame that it wasnt thought through better. This is a tough pill to swallow and bad PR like this certainly doesnt help.

What bugs me is all of our money spent to develop and initiate this, then print all the stickers and distribute them... madmadmad

What bugs me is they didnt learn anything from it, and are just going to do it all over again.

Those stickers were the biggest joke ever. I tried to get mine right away in March and they didn't have them yet. I called the DNR and sme crabby lady said they werent being enforced untill 2013, then my dad was at the courthouse a week ago (not sure for what) they had the decals and they said they would be enforcing them this summer, so he got some and I put them on 4 days ago. I put 2 on the trailer, and 1 on the back of the boat. Haha, and now afte all of this fuss they just go and repeal the whole law, are you kidding me! Serously people just take the plug out, check for weeds/mussels, don't go lake hopping, and drain them buckets, it is not that hard.

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
