Busy Ramps

Recommended Posts

Im getting ready to leave for my 8 day rr trip problem is im fishing solo sat thru wed i have found people to dump me in before but how do you handle loading getting the truck etc? I usally beach my boat then get the truck back in walk to get the boat n load. We all know how busy the ramps are any thoughts on what i could do to speed it up? How much does this [PoorWordUsage] people off when someone takes a few extra minutes to load? Its the only way I can fish the full 8 days.

Where are you staying? If it is at a resort just ask to park at their docks. Most won't charge you if you are staying there, all have open slips, it is safe and you can tie your boat out 4 ways so it doesn't get banged up and it is much easier to get going in the morning. The way the ramp looked by Wheelers last weekend, you will either need some help or something to defend yourself when you tie up a ramp. You don't have to worry about algea on the bottom as it is not warm enough.

I think most people will have some sympathy for a guy doing it by himself. As long as you are not spending five minutes backing up, putting in coats, coolers, etc after you back your boat in I dont think anyone will have a problem. They also have had people at most of the ramps during the weekends directing traffic, telling you where to park, etc. One of those guys might give you a hand as well.

Good Luck, I will be up Sunday. I promise not to give you a hard time smile

I talked to a resort on the river and they said the water level was too low to use their docks. I hope we get some rain before I come up there on the 13th.

Thanks chuckster.

I have gone solo before usally i can find someone to dump me in the morning its the loading that takes that extra time. Without the ice shelf this year beaching shouldnt be a problem. Not much else I can do if i want to fish so all you people in a hurry go easy on the single guy and remember waiting is part of it!

After a long wait, you'll get to know the people behind you. If you have a group of 3 behind you...or 2, many times to speed things up, they will help back you in and pull your truck off to the side while you beach your boat. Just ask, I'm sure someone will be more than willing to help.

I had a freind of mine who had difficulty backing in my boat. To speed things up, and fear that he'd get stage fright, I asked the the group behind me and they were more than helpful in giving me/him a hand.

My first time up here. We are staying at Sportsmans. We rented a slip for $10/ day- money well spent. The cabin is about 75 yards from the slip. Real nice to just pull in and grab lunch or warm ip. Easy mornings and evenings.

Found out that a landing net works well to move snow off the dock ramps.

Staying at a resort is the only way to do it (unless you live up here). Warm room, dock your boat and skip the ramp mess everyday, bathroom right on shore not to mention lunch made in the afternoon and dinner in the evening.

We were up there last weekend and camped at Rainy River Resort but the water was too low to keep the boat there. Instead of waiting in line to launch the boat we launched at the Marina and kept the boat there. We figured why waste a bunch of time launching and loading the boat after driving 6 hours to fish for a few days. They charged 10 bucks to launch the boat and a little bit to keep the boat there each day. Split 4 ways it wasn't too bad. We were able to run an extension cord to charge the batteries each night. Just an idea. Good luck fishing.

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
