What is the consensus up there on what the front will do to the fishing? I know the weekend is going to warm up. We are coming up and staying with Kelly P tomorrow.

Well it can't get much tougher then it is right now and I stumbled onto something that just might work. Kelly and I moved around a bit after my recent scouting. We have a plan. wink

Forcast looks ok for the weekend. 15 on Sat. and 25 for Sun. I plan on being up both days. Typical January bite so far. We just have to tough it out it will get better.

Jonny P-spill the beans! What is this plan?

The plan as good as it is working will remain a family secret. If I let out the old school secrets every “outfitter” that comes to town would know and what fun would that be? wink

Lets just say a few anglers are catching fish at an increased rate even though Kelly and I got some strange looks.

By next Thursday we will most likely have an entire new plan and most likely moved the fleet a few times by then.

The first thing I told KidWalleye was, "You are going to be an experiment". grin Early results last night looked fairly good but we'll see how things pan out and let him report. He does look really stupid sitting there over 1 mile from anyone else.

Blackjack, if this works plan on leaving shore with a full tank of gas and you might have to change time zones. grin

shaky, just be happy that you missed the fishing this last week. It was ugly out there both with the weather and the fishing. frown

Doc's kid got married yesterday. I'm just thankful that I don't have any cobwebs this morning. grin

How did Doc's kid getting married clear up your cobwebs? grin

Well KidWalleye got some walleyes but nothing like I hoped for. Maybe I should have used a Hamster for the experiment. grin I think we are back to portable versus hardhouse fish biting quandry. Last night when scouting Jon was getting into them pretty good in his portable so I slid a hardhouse in about 120 feet away and drilled out 2 holes to try it. I fished twice as long as Jon and caught I walleye compared to his 20 or so. But I was 100% on keeper fish while he only caught 4 that he could keep. crazy

I have to admit Johnny I was a bit suprised to see the fleet moving where it moved on Sat. I would like to offer some thanks though because I had to meander over and see what was over there. Lets just say it all made sense after that! wink Fishing was tough until we set the portable up and had 18 fish in less than 4 hours... Several too big with the largest a fat 23.5".

My wife outfished me 4:1 and it was great....made her very happy! Normally we have our little girls along and can't venture out in a portable but this weekend was the exception. It sure made for a great afternoon! The fish are biting somewhere...just have to find the right spot...problem is there is a lot of lake to search! Great job Johnny!

I NEVER venture out onto the Red without a full tank of gas!!! We'll have a portable along also in case you have a 'hot spot' that you want us to sit on!! smile

Getting psyched, piles are growing, see you Friday!!

On this side of the lake that was the biggest area with no fishermen. No vehicle traffic, no augers drilling holes, no generators running. A nice quite area for the fish to go to when they get spooked by all the noise. With no snow cover to dampen things sounds were traveling a long ways and every sound pushed the fish a little further away from the people.

Blackjack, we have a rough idea of where you're going to be. You guys are very self sufficient and with decent weather coming we can put you "way over there" by yourselves.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
