I did not post a review, but am disturbed that one that was posted recently was taken off without explanation.

Just so everyone knows I do not make those decisions on what gets deleted or not. Those decisions are made by people further up the chain of command then me. Seeing as I am in business on the lake I do not feel that it is right for me to decide what stays and goes so I have passed that responsibilty to other people that do not have a personal or business interest in URL.

I would guess that it was removed because it had become a "he said", "she said" situation. There are always 3 sides to every story. Your side, my side and somewhere in between there is the cold hard truth. I'm just glad that it was not our name mentioned because it was a tough weekend on the lake already. The bite slowing way down was the first blow and from it turned into a series of events that fit into the "You cann't make this stuff up!" Why would grown men shove their Buddy out of a moving truck to see how far he would slide on the ice? Why would you sneak around the lake turning the bottle gas tanks off on other people's houses "to be funny"? Why would you dump a keg of beer in the fishhouse because the tapper was not working? With the warm weather the pressure ridges moved a lot. There was a group of people worried about crossing the bridge but they had to get to shore so they were a little distressed. They felt better when it was explained to them that shore was 1/4 mile BEHIND THEM AND THAT THEY WERE ON THE SHORE SIDE OF THE BRIDGE. Then there was the guy in the dark last night that had gone out on Westwind's road but the bite was slow so he decided to go cross country to Roger's road. Then when he went to shore for bait he realized that he was at Hillman's on Highway #72. There he sat in the dark with no idea if his house was on Westwind's road or Roger's road or Hillman's road,,,, or someplace in between. It was a strange weekend and not even a full moon.

What I dont like is the "carcass dumping." If an outfitter knew it has happened in the past and has done nothing to contact the DNR about it they should be held accountable. I could fillet an 18-20" walleye off in under a minute and throw the carcass down the hole rendering it unmeasurable. Each one of those fish should have been a fine. I am sure the outfitter doesnt say anything cause he/she might lose a client for next year. In this case, the well-being of an outfitters checkbook comes before the long-term health of the lake and the rules.

Oh don't worry Buck. I am Marcum staffer with a fleet of underwater cameras and they get used often. If we feel anything has been dumped in the lake that our family has called home for over a century the cameras go down first thing. If something is found two calls are made. Patsy will call the clients and inform them they are NEVER welcome back and are blacklisted. The second call goes into enforcement. The lake has fed my family for four generations I will be "darned" if somebody is going to disrespect that.

No one likes carcuss dumping and the problem with it is you don't know who did it for sure. Was it the guys that just left or was it the guys in the place that don't want get pinched and want to move. Most of the resorts have good fish cleaning facilities and we will help with carcuss as well. Like I tell everyone our number is on the door in 3" letters. Carcuss dumping is illegal but you can not just start accusing guys you have to catch them in the action. This should not happen but like speeding someone will do it again.

Your last post is what makes your info so valuable and you and your dad one of the lakes best represenatives. Keep up the good work!

I do wish however that you could try to tell those walleyes to cooperate when I bring the family to visit! wink

Our houses are often moved between clients so 80% of the time we have one group per spot. As for houses that stay on a spot we check holes between uses as part of the cleaning checklist. We normally know for sure who either dumps or tries to bury stuff in snow banks.

I really can’t say it any better than what Kelly did. There is nothing wrong with saying you might have had a sub par experience with a certain guide or outfitter, and I can only speak for myself but my understanding is that it doesn’t matter if the negativity is pointed towards a sponsor or not. We just don’t want that kind of stuff at HSO. The problem is that really gets out of hand when accusations start flying. There are many outlets these days to “get your voice heard” It turns into exactly what Kelly said, a “he said she said they said” thing.

Unfortunately there is a lot of competition in the fishing business and people will go to great lengths to slap a bad name on their competitor, and an “online negativity campaign” is one of the most popular. I am in no way saying that is the case here, but there is no way for us to know.

Here’s is something everyone needs to think about when it comes to bad reviews. People are (highly) more likely to let you know about bad things than good. For every bad experience you read about there are probably 100 good ones people don’t share. I can tell you this, if we as Admins start seeing a pattern of bad review after bad review after bad review, then it most certainly will be discussed as to the best avenue to share this information. But I can assure you this has not been the case with the outfitter that was originally mentioned.

It’s kind of sad to say, but I bet if fish were coming through hand over fist every rental on the lake would seem like the Ritz. smile

We have some of the if the most strict "house rules" on the lake. One of those rules is that NOTHING is put in the fishing holes other then your hook, line and bait. It is that way both for the sake of the lake as well as the customers own fishing. If you are dumping your coffee, pop, beer or what ever in the holes you are putting a strange scent in the water and ruining your own fishing. If I stop by and check on a house and anything is laying in the fishing holes I suggest that they clean it up. When I check again and it is still there they are told to clean it up. If it is there on a third check my evil twin brother appears. None of us are more important then the Lake.

If we find that any fish parts or litter have been dumped down the holes

the people get a lifetime ban from our houses.

what do they look like this spring?
    • SkunkedAgain
I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
