I guess I dont understand the mentality of some teams. I would think the goal should be World series every year, and if you dont think your team can accomplish this, you find more key players in order for your team to make it, or at least give the perception that they stand a chance. I look at the Twins line up, and see, last place in our division, and only competition the Twins will have, is whether they will beat the 99 losses from last year or not. But yet fans are satisfied with that?

I don't think fans will be very satisfied with another last place finish. I do think it's a given that this organization is content with contending in a weak division and anything more than that is just unexpected extras. It's very profitable for the owners. If a person just can temper their expectations to match the team goals it isn't so bad. (Not an easy thing to do sometimes.)

I like this signing. sounds like only $450k of the $800k is guaranteed with the rest in incentives on a high potential player is a good risk. I know it's crazy to talk about $800k like it's no big deal is hard to swallow but after all we are talking professional athletes.

I guess I have come to accept mediocrity with MN sports teams, but to have the Timberwolves the best team to compete this year, is just a little disheartening. Dont get me wrong, I am a big Wolves fan, and they are actually going to be good this year, but after having the Twins tank the season, and the Vikings, is a little frustrating.

With the money the Twins have spent in the last few seasons and they ranked pretty high with the dollars they spent, I do not see them spending anymore than they have to until they can get rid of the M&M boys contracts.

The owners are in it to make a buck and spending more right now would be foolish for thier bottom line.

I would guess the stands will still be pretty full this season but they cannot have the following year the same or I am sure the attendence with slide.

Small market and they can only spend so much.

I am sure this will be a sad year as I see the M&M boys not doing much along with the loss of Cuddy and Kubel. Thats 2 pretty good bats lost and not much for new.

One can only hope Zumaya has a good season as the pitching needs alot of help boith for starters and the bull pen.

Hope and a prayer is all the Twins have right now.

Can we still be considered small market when we have the 4th highest attendance? And we arent to far back from moving up that list either!

I have to believe that those attendence numbers would not be there except for people wanting to see the new stadium.

I would guess if you go back and look at the previous 10 year average, those numbers would fall sharpely.

attendance is one thing, tv market is another. the angels just got a tv deal worth 3 billion over the next 20 years - 150 million per year.

the twins meanwhile have a deal where they get 29 million per year.

i'm not agreeing or disagreeing with how much the twins spend, i'm just saying attendance doesn't tell you the whole picture.

i will say, spending more money isn't going to fix their current problems of health.

I just hope our innings last longer than 5 minutes this year and 2 minutes of those were commercials, mom how'd I miss us bat ? Well strikeout, dribbler to 2nd and a K looking, oh, thanks mom. I wish Cuddy or Kubel could tell us the truth about the M and M situation.

the truth about m and m is out there. they were pampered and gardy/smith allowed them to sit with hangnails, hangovers and headaches while cuddy was playing with a broken wrist and kubel with a broken foot. Cuddy called them out saying they were soft (to use a polite term) and then management (smith) made him apologize to them. mauer for sure. hurt his feelings i guess. the more i hear mauer the more i am convinced he has been pampered his whole life and whatever he wants, he gets. He is soft and listens only to his mom..He needs to grow up and grow some....

i dont think this would have happened under kelly's watch. Morris basically said the same thing..inmates running the asylum...kinda like the kevin garnett years with the wolves...i see kelly is back in the mix down in florida now..we will see how that works..it may not have been all on gardy. it may have been his boss smith..glad he is gone...

Is that the deal, he feels so safe and secure in MN that he knows he'll always get a pass, if he would've signed in NY lets say I bet he'd be trying to prove it and himself daily. We just love our local boys, Morris,Molitor, etc. but they were old school with old school toughness, you do get a pass if you play old school style and are tough. Back to Zumaya, Mauer's hand might need to be tougher if Joel's arm is good to go. I really doubt he can pitch without a few trips to the DL. Maybe he has the intel on how to beat Verlander lol.

Zumaya to miss the whole season with torn ligament in his throwing elbow. We may just run out of players at this rate...

Wow, now I feel bad for Zumaya. I was really looking forward to watching the fireballer help us win a few games this year. I'd be really surprised if he didn't just hang it up for good after that one.

Just another typical broken- down- washed- up- over- the-hill twins free agent signing! I feel bad for the guy, but thats what the twins get for signing their trademark no count free agent.... Looks like the twins are picking up right where they left off last year, start adding to the injured reserve!

Hashtag-frown..... Just another day in loserville usa! What teams we have to root for in this state! Is there any awards for ineptitude?

The Wolves are exciting to watch this year, and they have a very promising future. They may even make the playoffs this season.

Zumaya's back-up plan is to maybe become a professional fisherman if he retires from baseball...as per today's Star Tribune. Just an FYI.

While I can agree with the overall disappointment most are feeling in terms of the direction of this team, I think it was a good signing that just didn't work. High risk, high reward, low dollars. Granted, $400,000 may seem like a lot of money to you or I, but it's less than the league minimum and chump change in our payroll. If Zumy comes in, is relatively healthy, and helps us win a few games, he is well worth that investment. Mauer makes that much every other day or so! As it turns out, it wasn't meant to be. He is only 27 years old--to me that is a far cry from investing multi-millions in a 35+ year old pitcher as we are accustomed to seeing. A bad result? Sure. A bad idea to begin with? I am not so quick to agree.

Pikestabber- totally agree it was low risk. But thats all the twins ever do is sign low risk players for CHEAP and it never really works out. Why not pony up and get a guy that is proven and not injury prone? Theres a reason the twins got Zumaya, cuz no one else wanted him. The pohlads are cheap and always will be- Lets not forget, they would have rather contracted the team not too long ago.

it's easy to rip decisions (this one is really easy). but, if you're going to say they should be spending more money, please list who they should spend it on.

Well, I know who they should NOT have spent it on! But they did it anyway and the franchise is already in the toilet because of it!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
