Are any of you available?

Thanks,

I should be out fishing on Monday as well. Mary is off work on Monday, so is my daughter Stacey. I will also be making some plans with PiedmontAngler (Vic). So we should be able to take care of your fishing needs.

Do you have big plans for Sunday night or do you need to take me out to dinner!!

Brian, I'm trying to line up a few others with multi-seat portables. I'm sure we'll have space for you. Will you need a lift to and from the lake?

I'm hoping to go out monday too. I'll possibly be alone, but wouldn't mind having some good chatter. It'd be my first time out in the duluth area.

northernfishin,

Please send me an e-mail when you have time. I'll then get you my cell number and we can try to work something out. Where are you located and where do you normally get out to fish? My e-mail is located below my signature. Talk to you later...

Brian, (bmc)

I'll wait for your call and we can make some plans for Sunday night.

Hope to fish again with you all and if you ever have an open seat I'm more than happy to trade up to a shelter!

You guys were dedicated standing out there on the ice yesterday, no doubt about that.

Nice meeting you guys, Jim and Vic.

Jim, thanks for the couple of hot spots on Deer! I'm looking forward to putting the info. to good use. Heck, might even try them out this winter yet!

Tom and Steve, always good to see you guys and get a chance to fish and [PoorWordUsage] with ya'!

Tom was there any bragging from Mary and Stacey who put the most keepers in the bucket? LOL

Always fun to fish a new lake!

Thanks again!

Brian

Happy to hear that you guys had a little more action before your evening ended. It was good to meet the two of you and I look forward to getting out with you again. Feel free to send me an e-mail or a call on my cell if you have some time off during weekdays as I have weekdays off on a regular basis. I'll put your number in my phone book so I don't miss your call. Not to many days with an open seat in my house on the weekends now that my wife has been bit buy the fishing bug.

Give a call if you are looking to add anything to your fishing gear before you go out and by new. I may be able to find something free or a great deal as people are always looking to upgrade. Another good way to come across some good equipment is to make it to HSO's Annual Swap Meet held in April in Twig at the Grand Lake town hall.

Thanks again for joining us on the ice!!

Hey Brian,

It's always good to be in your company. It may have been a new lake to you but it came up a little short when it comes to a "hot bite". I guess there is always next time.

The wife and I also enjoyed having dinner with the two of you the night before. I'll check my calendar and see if we can get up your way for another day of fishing or just a visit.

No bragging from Mary and Stacey about the days catch. The worst part was trying to get them to hang it up for the evening so we could get things packed up and head into the resort for some refreshment.

A big thank you to Jim Almquist for bringing out a spare Otter Cabin for the day so we could put it to use. Maybe I should say thanks to Lisa for having other plans so Jim could bring out the spare house!! smirk

Sounds good! I'm free all day thursdays and I have one night class on tuesdays. So as long as i can keep up with the homework, i can keep up with the bite!

That's some good help with the equipment. I'm always looking for good deals and more productive tackle to add to my box.

Hope to fish again!

Here's BD hauling in the massive Timber Musky he caught on his tip-up. It was so big, he wasn't able to get it through the hole, so he released it for the next lucky angler to catch. wink

Great meeting you bmc and northernfishin. Also glad to hear you guys found fish after putting up with the cold. I'll keep my ears/eyes open for a ultra cheap portable that you can fit into your car. I usually fish solo, so I will about always have at least one open seat. Shoot me an email and I can check to see if you are free when I'm going out.

Always great to get out with you other FM'ers; Tom (& the girls), Jim, Steve.

It was great to final put a name to a face Brian. We will have to get out on the soft water one of these days. Maybe the wife will have some training and we can get out on Superior for some Salmon or Trout.

Jim,

Pleeeeaaaase keep me in mind for some open water fishing on the big lake.

The one time I had the chance it was a spring FM get togther and the wind/waves made it a no go. Although we did go to Two Harbors and trolled in the breakwall area. I even caught a coho that day. LOL

Thanks again for bringing the extra gear for me to use. I appreciate it!

Brian

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
