My quest for the big one!!

Recommended Posts

I made up for it the next afternoon though, the video will say it all wink

Lake travel has worsened with all of the snow but the fish are still hungry, and it helps to have a decent weather pattern. Calling for highs in the 40's tomorrow, I might have to leave work a little early and stay on the lake a little longer to see if the slabs are going.

I fished last night, I started out on my normal lake and fished a different spot. Last year I started catching a lot of crappies out there towards the end of March so I figured I'd give it a whirl, I set up in 14 feet off of a weededge near deeper water and immediately started catching decent bluegills again so I got lazy and comfortable in my Team Wild 3.

I caught quite a few and then at about 6:30 they slowed down quite a bit and I started marking fish way up in the water column. They were no more than 5 feet under the ice. I pulled in 3 decent crappies as fast as I could get my bait down the hole and then they moved on and nothing for the next 30 minutes so I packed in and headed out.

I think I'll set up a little deeper next time. I'll be looking for 18 feet of water, doesn't take much of a move to make a huge difference.

I went out tonite---with the refrozen snow the travel was fairly easy. I drilled 4 holes and then set up over one and stayed put. The wind was just howling. It was pretty slow for a while then they started to come through in schools..........I ran out of wax worms smile I was using new jig --called a hexi fly, with it being so light weight it just drifted down the water column and thats when I got the hits. Ended up with 7 crappies and 4 sunnies. It was a fun night full-20662-18449-p1040798.jpg

Well with the beautiful weather I had to get the family out. My brother and I took the women and the kids out to fish for some bluegills on Saturday and it was a great time. The fish were cooperative and the kids really enjoyed themselves. The fishing got better as we got closer to dark, and within a half hour before dark we were all reeling them in one after another.

The lakes really got ugly fast frown

I was out last night to remove my fishhouse and some of the holes from Saturday were getting HUGE!

But I still managed to catch quite a few fish. I moved around at first and found them out deeper in 21-22 FOW and as the sun went down I started pulling in Bass, Crappies, bluegills, and even old rockbass as fast as I could drop my line. They were hungry and they moved in to the 10-14 foot depths as the light faded.

They were still biting when I left. Some really nice bull gills over 9" but the crappies were just so-so. Most of them were 10-11". I did manage a bass that was 19", that thing put up a heck of a fight on light tackle.

I'll be going out tonight on a different local lake to hit the gills and slabs.

WEll I'm still on the awesome bluegill bite, I mean it's really awesome. The fish are just going bonkers. The ice is holding up well, better than I expected.

Last night and the night before I went out and fished in the same location and the fish cooperated. I started out a little deeper, in the 18-20 foot range and as the evening went on they moved in to 11-15 feet and each drop they would race up to grab my bait.

A lot of 8-9" fish. I still haven't caught that elusice 11"er but that is a fish of a lifetime and I have quite a few years left in me to fish smile

I have a trip planned on Saturday to a lake that has been produced plenty of nice bluegills over the last few years. Chad "crappie sniffer" Peterson and a few others are coming up to turn this lake into swiss cheese and we will see what we can do.

Well my quest on ice has ended... short of my lofty goals I set but it was a successful season and I look forward to next ice season.

I fished Saturday with Chad Peterson aka Crappiesniffer up here in Mahnomen County and we found some crappies and some gills but nothing huge and we had to work our butts off on some pretty nasty ice. The ice was in good shape, but the surface was rippled and pitted so it made for some sketchy walking conditions.

I then had a trip for work into the metro area for a couple of days and came back to see Roy lake and a couple of smaller lakes WIDE open. I checked out the lake up in my area last night and it looks like it will give out by this weekend. I also noticed a lot of northerns in the creek.

I now look forward to the upcoming open water season. I may hit the river to see if I can catch some suckers in the mean time.

I seriously wouldn't doubt it at this point! smile

I'll be out farting around trying to find a decent shore bite with my son. It's fun jumping from lake to lake and hitting the shorelines for active fish smile

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
