This is beyond frustrating. It's been apparent that most of the team has quit this season. Not a good sign. Hopefully Morneau and Mauer will get there stuff together next year.

It's obvious the Twins season is over. No sense playing these guys that aren't 100%. Let the kids play to see who's got a shot for next season. We can only hope the M & M boys will get healthy in the off season, because we have NO shot at all in the years to come without those two.

Mauer is soft.

Certainly not worth the money he is making.

He is been complete garbage this year.

If you or I did our jobs as poorly as him we would not have a job.

Completely has not met expectations.

Really makes you wonder. Most everyone on the team was too sick with some kind of ailment (flu, virus, along with the other sprains, tweaks, concussions, etc.) this year, even Gardy. Is that new stadium making them ill? It's just crazy.

All these guys getting hurt and sick all yr long maybe they could use a new strength and condtioning coach to go along with new pitching and batting coach.

This really makes me wonder if there isn't something bigger going on with mauer. First its the bilateral leg weakness then some nagging injuries, and now he gets pneumonia. Is there something bigger and badder behind all this.

seems it's been one thing after another with him this season. hopefully it's not a chronic deal with him. if healthy, joe is one of the best players in the game but as we've seen this year, without the health, it ain't pretty.

I hope I am wrong but do believe that we've seen the last of morneau as we knew him prior to the concussion last year. sounds like they are considering him as mostly a dh next season and that might help him but even so, doubt we'll ever see mvp type numbers from him again and that really hurts this team given his salary.

Report is that during a taping of his newest Gatorade commercial he got ahold of a bad batch.

I am kidding. Problem with Mauer and Morneau is with ther health history and salaries, we are stuck with them. I don't see us spending any money on free agents, and we are in for a long ride over the next few years.

i dont know if anyone out there has tried Joe Mauer brats that went on the market awhile back. when i first saw them i picked a pack up and looked at the price and i thought, there is no way this is going to sell. there are 4 brats in a pack and at that time they were just under 5 bucks a pack. well fast forward a little and sure enough i saw them for $1.50 a pack for they were close to being out of date at cubs where i shop. didn't look like they sold a pack for the spot they were in was still nearly full and all marked down. i bought a few just because of the price. they were no different than the hillshire or other brands in comparison in taste. have not seen any of his brats since. good luck.

We have seen the best of the M & M boys. Their finished. Get rid of both of them.

It is a sad thing to think, but I would agree with that statement.

Mauer and Morneau are still fairly young.... there's no telling what could happen in the next few years.

Twins are just like the vikings last year. Thier previous was season of playoff caliber, then the next year, with a similair roster, become one of the worst teams in thier league. Doesn't make much sense.... things just didn't come together this year.

I can tell you. They aren't getting younger, and injuries are getting more and more plentiful every year. One day in the not so distant future we are going to have the highest paid DH only that plays 65 games a year and a first basemen that will retire early due to fears his head is going to be permanently hurt.

And the reason why things aren't coming together for them is they aren't signing anyone new that can make a difference.

Funny how everyone on here has changed their tunes in just one year. Last year I was ridiculed for even suggesting that the Twins not sign a catcher to one of the largest contracts in league history simply because he is from here. Good luck with the next several years.

Look at their numbers of errors and then look at the number of close games they lost. Second and third base, and even shortstop were losing games for them all year. Oh, and hitting suffered. Pitching is a different story. It is easier to pitch when the team is ahead, and the infield plays error free.

I think having Mauer DH is the best thing they could do. If he did nothing but hit his average would be awesome. A catcher may never be worth that contract but a DH batting .400 sure is.

A DH hitting .400? Let's be realistic. The reason you have a DH in your lineup isn't for singles, which Mauer is one of the best at, or double plays(he's pretty good at that too). You have a DH to supply power to the lineup. A successful DH, Ortiz for example, makes what... half of Mauers contract? Having Mauer fall back onto just being a DH would be a failure of epic proportions. Rather, let's move him around the field and see where he feels most comfortable. First base, perhaps? Who knows what we're going to get out of Justin, because unfortunately, the concussion effects are still lingering. This remind anyone else of Koskie?

Mauer is soft and has no passion for the game.

He cannot play a day game after a night game because he is too tired.

This guy is a complete joke.

The Twins were foolish to pay him all that money.

Huh?

You don't get to the Major Leagues with out passion for the game.

Not playing a day game after a night game is a Twins philosophy for the big knockers started in the Tom Kelly era. Those were the days a guy namaed Kirby Puckett was rested also.

Joke?

He is the only catcher in Major League history to win three batting titles. He has also won three consecutive Gold Glove awards (2008–2010), and the 2009 AL MVP award. He's only 27, 28?

Say what you want about "The Contract". I beleive it comes with the territory of baseball economics. Only time will tell.

Ask the Cards or whoever is going to pony up for Pujols. The could have locked him up last spring. Oops.

Who cares about what he has done in the past.

What has he done lately?

Not a bleeping thing that makes him worth more than a bag of balls and a box of bats as far as I am concerned.

Couldn't agree more...he is as soft as Charmin tissue paper. I bet the Twins front office is completely running in circles right now...they are stuck...big time!

How many players in the World Series were playing hurt...even throughout the whole play-offs? Mauer is a super talented young player that needs some LEADERSHIP and STRONG-HANDED management to get him focused on what's expected of him. The Twins have neither.

The best thing the Twins could do right now is aquire a free-agent who has the experience and the nuts to call Joe "out". Nobody in the organization will do it now. If they don't, "they" or him, has to go.

yes this past season was brutal for him but let's not write him off yet. don't think he was healthy at all and hopefully he will get his health back and we'll see more of the mauer that we've seen in previous seasons.

no, he likely will never earn the $ that he signed for but few baseball players really do earn their $ based on their on the field performance.

He admitted that he does not work out much in the off season.

He said he was going to work out more and eat better this off season.

He is getting paid an absurd amount of money to play a game and he does not have the decency to keep himself in shape.

He admitted that when he was younger he really did not have to do much to stay in shape but it is getting harder as he gets older.

The guy is soft and has no work ethic.

He will never fully reach his potential with the attitude he has.

He is the single most overrated athlete in MN sports history.

The Twins should trade him.

They might be able to get a bag of balls and a bat or two for him.

Certainly no team would give us an actual player for him.

I have never been a Mauer apologist.

I have ripped him since he was drafted.

He is complete garbage, the Twins need to call him out and tell him to remove his head from his sphincter.

I see he said yesterday he is more ready than ever for next year.....

I am thinking 2 things happened to Joe.

1. Realized he was a slacker last year in the off-season and needed to improve his off season work outs.

2. Billy (allowance for whining) Smith was fired and there is a new(old) Sheriff in town who expects more bang for his buck!

When Joe firsdt came up, he was all that.

Since then or the past few seasons, seems if he bumps his little toe he has to sit and watch.

He got his huge contract and now it seems he is LAZY.

Too bad the Twins cannot dump him as he will be a spendy first baseman at best unless he gets his head and body back in the game.

He will hurt the Twins until his contract runs out.

Only time will tell but it does not look good for Joe.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
