Congrats Jim!!!

That man is pure class. Glad he was on our side for a couple of seasons, he's been a joy to watch.

I don't think athletes like Thome are recognized enough. We see all too often the ones that are essentially 17 year old boys with millions of dollars. It's fun to see people like this do well.

i like how bert was bashing the yankees and jeter during thome's at bat while espn had picked it up to show nationally.

That was more of a slam on ESPN in my opinion. And it was well deserved.

My gf's friend recently got engaged, so to celebrate we went out for a quick early happy-hour-appetizer-dinner.

We get back home after, and turn the twins game on, as Thome steps up to bat and we hear them mention how he just belted 599. I've only missed one of his HRs this year, so I was a little disappointed.

One swing later, I didn't care that I'd missed the previous at bat!

Talk about our luck, if we'd spent one more minute at dinner, in traffic, or otherwise, we would have missed his monumental achievement being broadcast live.

Very sweet indeed! A claas act for sure and an elite club to be a part of, period! (minus Bonds, Sosa and A-rod).

It was pretty cool, was mowing the lawn, took a quick break for a beer, and caught the whole at bat! Nothing like watching history live.

Such a tremedous thing to get to that club. In all the history of MLB, Mr. JT gets in too! I hope he gets to the hall right away!

Anyone else see that Cuddy was the first one to congratulate Big Jim? I've always imagined they are best buddies and have plans to go ice fishing together in the off season.. lol.

Now for him to pass that Sammy So-So and get 10 more.

Yeah but he's a juicer so his position doesn't really matter. He's not going to catch ARod. And he needs 30 more to tie KGriff. So as far as I'm concerned, I think he should hang em up this year with a huge smile on his face. Congrats big Jim! Everyone says what a class act he is, and there is no disputing it.

Wish I'd have been there to cheer for him. Glad our Tiger fans gave him the ovation he deserved. I remember when Verlander was a young kid (Younger than now, I guess). Thome hit him real hard. Couldn't get him out. I believe they have become friends now. Congrats, from a Tiger fan.

Sad to say it but I think it's time to trade him. We got to see 600 and he won't be back next year. I'd like to see him on a team with a chance to win it all - it's then only thing missing from his great career. Might as well take a change with a draft pick or prospect.

As much as I want to see a world series ring go Thome's way, I definitely think that he'd have to go to the Sox, Yanks, or Phillies to have that chance. They are just playing too well this year, though we may have another "Giants-type" upset come postseason.

Unfortunately, I doubt any of them are interested.

I figure this will be his last season.

Supposedly Gardy thinks he's going to be with the twins for one or two more seasons.

So at the ceremonies tonight, Cuddy got up on the mic and presented Thome with a giant rapala, a fishing rod, and if I heard it right a fishing trip for Thome and his dad to go on. If Cuddy and Thome aren't fishing buddies yet, they're pretty close to it now laugh

Now they just need matching BFFs tattoos laugh

Glad our Tiger fans gave him the ovation he deserved.

Hopefully he would get that kind of reception everywhere. Regardless of what team you were a fan of or any hard feelings about trades or baseball soap opera stuff, you have to respect 600. You just have to.

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
