Bear hunting guide/lodge - recommendations??

Long Gray Line

Recommended Posts

The wife said she wants a rug, so, I'm getting a bear hunting trip next fall! Gonna do this with a bow and so I'm looking for your recommendations for a bear lodge/guide/outfitter, probably up in Ontario. I've never hunted for bear w/ a bow, but the bow is no issue, I hit what I aim at out to 50 yards so I'm ok there. I need some place that's going to do the baiting, skinning and processing. I've never processed a bear and don't want to waste the meat with my on-the-job training. It'd be great to be at a place where I can fish the morning and hunt when the bears get active. Basically, not a fly-in rough-it outfitter for my first time. Where have you been that was good and I'd even like to know where to avoid. I've looked at the prices and it'll be an issue but comes 2nd after a quality outfitter!

Tks much,

Jeff

Avoid Golde Fawn on Fawn du lac lake. This place isnt for the beginner. Hereyou have to set up your stands run your own bait skin gut quarte etc. Its a bisic do it your self set up. They provide lodges, bait and pre baited sites. Its a good hunt but like you said not so much for the beginner. If you change your mind I know of some good minnesota bear guides that I can put you in contact with also. Good luck and any questions dont heitate to ask.

I have been to Lukinto Lake Lodge for the past several years, for fishing. It's located near Longlac Ontario. The fishing is phenomenal. I know last year their bear hunters had 100% success rate, but I also know that can fluctuate greatly depending on the berries that year and other factors. I'm not sure about what all that they provide but check out their website and give them a call.

Thanks Boar - Been busy baiting for the hunt. Here are a few trail cam pics from a couple new sites this year. We have packages to accommodate all your needs in a hunt with everything taken care of. We have had 100% success for over 8 years with multiple bears on basically every bait site. Have used around 5 tons of bait so far in the shaker barrels. We are taking reservations for the 2012 season. We also be offering some new more basic do it yourself packages in 2012, we will post more details after this years hunt.

Gateway North obviously does a great job.

I don't know the guy at Holinshead Lake Resort but I harvest timber on his Bear

Management Area and he has killed some nice ones this past week.

Pin cherries hit heavy this year and the bears have been tearing down trees all across my access roads.

I've been seeing 3 and 4 a day on the roads.

Boar - you have to make the trip when it works into your schedule. I know from talking with you that would have a blast. When you make it, just hold out and watch all the action first, unless the big boy comes in right away!

I've got some set ups on one end of my areas that would work great for you if bring up a bike. Shaker barrels are there and you would be amazed at the action. Just won't let you take a weapon in the first night so you get the full experience of multiple bears hammering the baits! Shoot me an email when you get a chance. It is busy here now, have 6 hunetrs starting tonight.

  • 3 months later...

Do not want to discount then places already mentioned, but Chad and Michelle at Pasha Lake Cabins run a great bear package; wonderful bear hunts. Google Pasha Lake Cabins, can't beat it.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
