I believe I'll be able to make it. I've been on this site for 2 years or so and never met anybody. Should be a good time as I've been out on the lake a few times in the winter.

Thanks shack and Paul for putting it on. hope to be there saturday around 7am.

Yep, all you need is some basic fishing equipment, some warm clothes and other essential goodies and one way or another you will have a line down the and under the Mille Lacs ice. wink

I am hoping the high pressure holds out with a milder warm & low system rolling in at the end of the week. Not only for the fishing, but for keeping the temps higher.

Either way we will be fishing and it will be a fun time. smile

It's still early to tell by the way the systems have been coming in and tracking lately, but this will give you an idea for this Saturday:

It would say as the week goes on the we will see this pushed ahead one day.

I know Paul will have some basics in the office. Best is to talk with him or he will post what they have. Not sure if he has live minnows this year or not. Also for anyone who is interested, check with Paul though, but I believe Appeldorns might rent out flashers and cameras also.

What I almost always use now is the Lindy Rattlin' Flyer spoon

Rattln%20Flyer_9_Fire%20Tiger.jpg

on my jigging pole and a set bobber, with a glow or colored hook on my second. The Lindy Darter:

Looks to be a very good choice in the jiggin' rap choices. I have not used either the Chubby or Lindy styles because the Rattlin' Flyer has been just one of the lure that I have confidence in. If the fish are their and they are feeding, I will be catching them. wink

Walleyes and perch seem to have their days when it comes to either jigging action style approaches or set dead-sticking/bobber setups catching fish. I just have found if you start out with both, then if either one shows to be the better of the two, switch it up and if anything jig with both hands. grin

We have everything that you could possible need (well, almost) but we do have bait, jigs, etc. I'm with Shack on the Rattlin' Flyer spoon. 1/8 or 1/16 is best. Make sure that you have at least one in Tullibee smile

Paul and shack this sounds like fun.I'm gonna talk to a buddy and see if a couple would want to make the drive up there 2hrs maybe a bit more, never fished there before. Is it a day bite or does one need to stay till after dark for a better bite?

Well guys, unfortunately I am out for Saturday. My wife reminded me yesterday that we have her company Christmas dinner this coming Saturday at 6:00. Talk about a let down!

I may try to get up there Sunday for the day but who knows. Between the weather and other obligations, i'm off to a roaring start this year. I'll be anxious to read any updates Saturday night. May the rod tips bend often and the ice never soften.

Newbies are certainly welcome. Just bring your own gear and we will help get anyone who comes on some fish and do our best with getting the Mille Lacs "0" walleye category filled for those who have not caught one. grin This should be a great day for fishing to boot, but being Mille Lacs no one can predict anything till you're in the middle of it. laugh

WestsideFishing, a tip up is just fine. I would prepare for both though. If the weather is decent, fish are in the area and hole hopping is best, the tip up is very cool to have along. If you are in the ice house the majority of the time and have a second line down, then a dead-stick option works better for me.

Hey guys,

I'm definetly in for saturday but my ice auger is in for repairs. I'll bring a hand auger but would like to hole hop if someone is going to be drilling community holes. Wondering if most people will be fishing in the same area and what area that may be.

Hey fin, i will be with the group on Saturday, I plan on swish cheesing the areas so if you need to use some holes out there feel free to help yourself. I will be in the blue ice armor, short asian guy. Planing to set up the yukon for base and warmth but majority of the time plan on hole hoping throughout the day unless majorly winding or subzero weather. See you there...

No official meet time but 8:00am sounds to be a good time. Nothing formal about this GT, just come if you can and fishing is the objective. 5:00am, 8, 10, noon or 2, come on up if you can.

Just stop in the office and see Paul when you get their. If we are not driving out by then, we will be getting you out to the area we are fishing.

Yep broman the weather is sounding pretty good still. wink

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
