i believe some bad investments and using the rd as collateral caused them to lose it. just what i've heard. the parking lot was empty the entire week last week.

The bank in Baudette is the current owner of the Dutchman. Unless they find a new operator it will not be open in the immediate future.

To set the record straight, the bank does own the Dutchman now. Doug and Marilyn now live in Missouri and Doug works in Iowa in the waste water management field, which was what he did before owning the Dutchman. For those of you who know Ally and me, we are still in Baudette and still try to keep in touch with our past customers. Ally works at the muni and I work at the North side hardware store. The Dutchman may be closed for six months to a year, depending on legal [PoorWordUsage]. We still live on the river and I fish as much as I can. Will try to post as much as I can in the Spring and Fall but now I have a real job and have to WORK eight hours a day! We are all doing fine and hopefully the Dutchman will be open soon.

Stayed there a few times and really liked that place and the owners/staff.

The best was when Marylene knocked on the door one morning and said, "Doug, your friend called from jail he's ready to be picked up!" When it was time to pay out she said it was a first not charging one person for staying in jail!!!

It's too bad what happened and wish them the best...

Well, just got re-registered and looked at the Rainy Forum for the first time since we left. Sorry for not posting sooner but just couldn't bring myself to do it. I've had to do too many things I didn't want to lately. Appreciate the kind words but they sure don't make this any easier.

So why did it happen? When a train hits you, it's not the caboose that kills you & I guess the global economy crash wouldn't have killed us IF: We hadn't had the flood of '02 2 weeks after buying the Dutchman and increasing our debt by 50% rather than giving it back then. IF: The MN Dept. of Health hadn't delayed the opening of our new building by several months costing us over $60,000 in lost revenue. IF: The Walleye and Sauger limits hadn't been drasticly reduced, which did the same to our traffic. If: We hadn't leveraged the Dutchman to get into a Canadian camp right before fuel prices spiked, passport requirements, and a steady decline in border trafic down to 1972 levels. Who knows?

I do know that we are very luck people to have had the experiences that most just dream of, to get to meet some incredible individuals, and to share in some of the most enjoyable times of their lives.

We would do it all again, even if it was to end this way!

We will miss you guys but who knows when we might be in the boat or ice house next to you!

Doug & Marilyn

Doug and Marilyn are first class folks. It would be nice to see both of you back running it. I don't believe anyone could run it better.

Maybe luckier but not better!!

Sorry to hear about the Dutchman, I have driven past it many of times in my travels from Int'l Falls to LOW.

Please don't let that stop any of you from coming up and fishing the Rainy River this spring. There are still many quality places in Int'l Falls and Baudette. Yes that means a little longer drive each way but hopefully by 2012 the Dutchman is open for business again. If you would like information on lodging in Int'l Falls please feel free to contact me, for the inside scoop.

Good luck to all of you hitting the water soon.

Sad to say the Dutchman is still not up and running. Miss Doug and Marilyn in the area. Have not heard what is coming up for the Dutchman. I have started catching some walleyes through the ice on the river in the past week too...

@awalton: I am curious how the Closing on the Royal Dutchman went for yesterday 02/15/2012? Myself and our party had stayed there for a number of years. Last year we had to try another place, so wondering if there will be life again at the Dutchman... grin

Hello everyone....the closing went good and we have been spending every extra minute getting it ready to open. We are almost done with the new side and then it will be time to start the river side. I am so sorry that I did not reply faster I have been checking this site and never noticed a comment thankfully by husband saw it. Thanks to the previous owners we now have the website domain with some info on there and hope to add more by the end of the weekend.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!
    • PSU
How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
