got the blues or what???

Ive been working so much no time for fishin

I still think and this is reports from my 15 yr old son but the rum river is still to high for sucker action .

The lakes should be ice free this week

Little Elk has some ice on it yet also the water is once again over the top of the little dam on the south end due to the rain we had.

WON"T BE LONG NOW.....COME ON OPEN WATER

Well the panneis are biting in the early ice out spots! Caught tons of gills and crappies today and got a good tan as well. Kept 3 crappies and 15 gills to fry up for inlaws. Good luck and eat well!

Hmmm, Got the boat out the other day. Sounds like I better get the motor on it this weekend. Glad you had a good outing. MM78

Just heard the same from someone who has been able to fish. It sounds like if you can get some water to fish, there's fish to catch.

I'm in turkey huntin mode right now - or car fixing mode. Just got word a car is limping home from a meet and greet with a deer.

Good luck out there.

Well I went fish for crappies and gills today. I did not catch one gill which is odd, but boy did the crappies turn on. I caught and released well over 200 nothing huge but I did get one nice 11 incher and could have had limit of 9.5 to 10 inchers. Most were in the 7 to 9 inch range. For gear i was using a flu flu jig tipped with gulp and a weighted slip bobber. I did see one boat on the lake today. This weekend I think I may take out my boat out. Good luck and eat well!

Tried any area lake today for a few hours and did pretty well with the sunfish. Ended up catching around 50, most of them late morning/early afternoon, and only a few later on. Almost all of them were 6-8 inches, with many 7-8 inch sunfish, and only a couple smaller and none bigger. Ended up fishing from around 11:30 or so-5:15. Was fishing in some shallow mud using assorted plastics. Have fun, and good luck fishing!

I went fishing to day to elk lake caught some sunfish nothing to laugh at 5-8 inchers and caught some crappies but not to many caught my biggest one today so far 11 and 1/2 inches. The one thing that bugged me today was how rude people are. A guy elbows his way in between me and another guy who had been fishing there. Then the guy who elbows his way in calls his kid out of the car. Well the kid could cast better then his old man, but I could not believe it.

Good luck

yeah elk can be a fun place where everyone enjoys catching fish or it can be just groess with the way some people act like they are better than you and they know a secret that you don't......makes me kinda laugh at how some people act!!

Got up early this morning so I could fish! Boy that was a good idea. LOL. It felt like it was winter I could have used the fish house. Caught some not to many, but its fun to pull in fish. I was at elk again. Today I ran into 2 really nice people so that makes up for the other day. The crappies were 5-8 inches i caught today and the gills were about the same size as the crappies. I was using a flu flu and gulp. Bobber set at most about 10 inches down to the jig. If you do fish elk at ridgewood bay resort please dont bring you own drinks or food support the resort, because they dont have to let us fish for free.

Skipped the Rum for fishing today since the water is so danged muddy and went to a local lake instead.

Got out early to beat the heat on what looked like a stellar top water morning only find out - not so much. Surface temps were 75-77 while we were out. The only thing we could get going shallow was small bass, pannies and a small walleye on crappie jigs under bobbers.

We headed out to the outside weedline and started cranking diving cranks and picked up an 'eye and a pike. We changed to lipless rattle baits and moved up a bit closer to the weeds. Well, we found just about everything by doing that. Pike, bass, and a couple 'eyes.

With the bass in their post spawn/summer/lazy mood I was looking for that school packed in tight on a spot and found them with the rattle bait and then we "extracted" about a dozen 18 inchers from one small spot with a jig worm. That was fun.

We pupped out and went home around Noonish. It turned out to be a good day after a slow start.

Well the water temps and levels have risen for sure since my last time out. The Rum is at spring time flood stage and moving fast. Not fishable in my opinion unless you have to fish and it's the only place you can go. Don't expect much.

The lake we went to last night was high also - highest I've ever seen it. The surface temp was 80 degrees. In areas where weeds matted on the surface only 3 weeks ago, they're submerged now.

As we're usually looking for a top water bite whenever we get out for a few hours, we were again denied. The fish weren't interested. We did wind up finding a nice school of bass on the weedline though that kept us entertained with about 15 fish from 12 to 19 inches. Texas rigged worms and jig and craw were producing most of the tail walking action after they were discovered via Shad Rap.

Went out to Coon Lake last Sunday for a few hours in the evening. Surface water was just about 80 degrees.

We started deep and fished a couple key spots but even on a Sunday evening it was 'take a number' on the better spots. I was suprised to see the number of boats out and all kind of keeping an eye on the other guys and waiting for an opportunity to fish an area. The shallows were really no different.

We fished the weedlines, flats, reeds, and docks. Not always our best spots due to others being on their best spots too wink but some good ones that should have produced some bass and possibly pike. The docks were the only payout and a bit chinsey at that. A couple quality fish were pulled but more small ones than large. Evidence of catch and release was also evident on a few of the fish.

So for what it's worth, my next outing will be somewhere else.

Thought I would get out on The lake(Little Elk) tonight with Joey and try and relax spent about an hour and a half fishing docks.

Caught several small bass and miss a few the bite was kinda light and even this one bit really light. The dock bite has been going good from the others I have talked too. 3x salamander was the ticket tonight.full-15313-11617-img00082_20110826_2014.

Bass are still biting got 14 of them in 2.5 hrs still working the docks but they arnt as agressive as the other day they wanted a powerworm slowly dragged across the bottom and they would just pick it up and start swimming away with it. had to really watch the line for bite detection.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
