North Lida Lake Fishing Reports

Recommended Posts

I thought I would make a specific thread on here since so many seem to ask about this. Please dont give specific locations just method of attack, depth perhaps and how you did.

I was out last Sunday night ended up with 8 in the 12"-13" range with one just over the slot. 34 ft of water. Action was anything but fast and furious, but it was steady. Every 20 mins or so a few would cruise through and you could usually pick one or two up. Best luck jigging a forage minnow. Im hoping to get out tonight.

I'm confused, how did you get 8 between 12-13" but only 1 over the slot?

We got 17 last night, about ten were over the 11" minimum. 28 fow, red glow tear drop with a waxie or a red glow frostee spoon with a minnow head.

Just wondering, and I could and probably will look up, but what are the crappie specs as far as how many a person can keep and the size.

as far as the limit its 10 with a minimum size of 11 inches thats mouth closed not open seen many people get pinched for that one out there. When iam out there the rule in my house is if you cant see the 11inch line thru the tail back it goes.

To clarify: caught 1 just over the 11" slot and threw it back. Kept 8 in the 12"-13" range. Bad wordage on my part.

Went out in a different spot Sat. night with some buddies and did really well. 24 ft this time. The bonus was that as long as we used waxies we were catching some nice sunnies mixed in the crappies even after dark. Its going to be tough getting around now after all this snow blowing around.

Got around 35 slabs last night, but no gills. Last year we caught lot's of gills with crappies after dark in the same area and depth, they may be in shallower but they definately are not under my house this year. Madbomber, shoot me an email, I have a question to ask you.

On another note, Lida also has a slot for walleyes. I believer it's everything between 17-26 inches goes back. Minimum on Crappies is correct, must be 11" or better to keep, regular state limit and possession laws apply as well.

heading up to the cabin this weekend on the south end of North Lida. There is really no access on this side and I was just wondering how the snow cover looks? would 4wd still work to get around on the lake or would you just recommend sled travel? Thanks.

Anybody got a report after the warm weekend on ice conditions between the access & first big group? Pulled our 2 houses off on Fri before the bad weather and did not make it back to the cabin since. Might make for an interesting tourney, at least last year was decent weather & ice.

Might need a sled until it firms up but then you may bog down your sled in the slush. It's not pretty out there right now.

I thought I saw early that there is a derby on Lida this weekend (1-30-10). Can anyone confirm this? I have been fishing lida away from the main groups in 20-24 fow and been having good results for sunfish with a few crappies mixed in.

I believe there is one on Saturday on Lida and I know there is one on Little DL. I will be having one on Lida on the 13th. PM for details.

The Pelican Rapids Jaycees do in fact have a derby this Saturday. Decent prizes from what I saw on their flyer. I dont know if any info is online though.

I have never seen any info online but if the Lida derby is the same as the last few years then it will run from 11-3. Always a good time! You can get tickets on the ice or in Pelican.

I didn't fish in it but by the looks of the cars and houses I would say the #'s were good. I talked to one guy who said a 17 inch waldo won it but I can't confirm that. Fishing on lida was super slow and I only got one crappie this evening.

I was out last night as well, super tight lipped fish and not much moving. This extended cold front and high pressure has the fish hukered down preety good. We got 3 slabs and marked a few uninterested fish.

Picked up 11 eyes last night on lida. 7 keepers,2 little ones,2 in the slot. Biggest was 24in. Marked alot of suspended fish after dark but could not get them to bite anything. Most of the eyes bit between 4:15-5:45 in 24fow. Pulled wheelhouse across the lake with no problems.

Spinner what color is your house and what part of the lake is it on?

Went after the crappies on Saturday and Sunday. Drilled a lot of holes and found one hole that produced several slot fish. The hole was in 18 FOW with weeds up to 10 feet. The weird thing was I drilled holes within 5 feet of this hole and never caught a crappie in any of these holes. The sunfish seem to be a lot less aggressive compared to last weekend but my brother and I still managed to catch a limit of 8 inchers.

  • 2 weeks later...

Tried Lida for the first time Saturday. Went out with my grandpa and dad. Had no clue where to go, so took the plowed road and just headed out. Ended up on the North side near a point toward the end of the houses in 24 FOW. Drilled all over the place and the depth never varied more than a foot. Got harassed by dink perch at every hole. Threw everything in the tackle box down there and couldn't get anything to come in.

Finally at about 4:30 some big red lines showed up suspended on the flasher. Quick reeld up my Lindy Rattlin Flyer tipped with a minnow head and had an instant hit. Reeled up an 11 inch+ crappie. Then that was all she wrote.

Lots of houses coming and going. Lots of trucks getting stuck. I can't figure out why in the world people try to offroad it when there's a nice plowed road to drive on. One guy got stuck running parallel to the road while pulling a trailer with a 4-wheeler on it. He had to unload his wheeler and clear a path to the plowed road. Two hours later I think he finally started fishing.

My advice if you want to venture from the well-beaten path: bring an ATV or snowmobile. You'll save some a bunch of time, work and pride.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
