I am also looking for reports on some of the larger lakes (Lida, Big D, Pelican, Lizzie).

I have to believe that if lakes locked up last weekend there has to be 4+ inches of ice with the bitterly cold days and nights.

It looks like it will be pretty hard for a guy to get a perm. house out on the "no wake zone" on Leif. I drove past today and notice that there is a large dock section and No Trespass signs on the area most guys drove on and off with houses... Bummer

I guess I can't blame the guy if he had damage to his property in the past.

jiggin-

You caught a walleye on Silver...that must be the only one in there...lol. Any size to it or just a dink? The only fish of any size I've cuaght in 1 full season of ice fishing (last year) and open water (this past summer) in my 16' Alumacraft was a 2-3 lb. smallie along the south shore in the weeds...

4.5 to 5 inches on Lee Lake by Hawley. It held my 300lbs up. Nice to get out there and "practice" on the guppies. Lots of little gills and perch. I also saw a small permanent on Middle C. I could hardly believe my eyes.

Not much activity anywhere else that I could see. Everyone must've been working! I might try Little C tomorrow, wherever I go, ill post a report.

Got out on Lida today for a few hours with a few friends. Ended up with about a dozen keeper slabs and another 20 or so throw backs. Got a few gills as well, but they were a little finicky. It was good to get out again and ice some fish. Probably won't get out again until Thursday when I'll be chasing Greenbacks up in Selkirk until Sunday laugh

By the looks I saw on minnetonka today you will have the whole lake to yourself. From mound to Excelsior not one fisherman to be seen on the ice anywhere PERIOD....

Fisherdog, what area of Lida holds the crappies in the winter? Not lookig for exact spots but would like to be steered in the right direction. If you don't want to give out the info. over the site I can shoot you an e-mail. Is it deep weed edges, flats, holes, north end, south end...I'm puzzled as to where they are as I sure never find them and you appear to be the local Lida crappie expert.

I myself tried Grove. Had 7 inches of ice but only caught a few bass. Same with another guy I talked to. The lake was horrible last winter so I am not sure why I bothered trying it again. I feel the lake was pounded too hard and the sunnies just aren't there in numbers anymore.

I would hardly consider myself the Lida crappie expert, I was actually shown the spot where we have great luck with our permanent. The early ice panfish are caught in 10-13 fow water during the day in a deeper hole surrounded by shallow water. At night, they usually slide out deeper; we weren't in an area with deep water near by so the crappies turned off or move out of the area. Closest deep water was about 50-75 yards from us and we didn't want to move so we packed it in. As the season get's older, the crappies will roam deeper water and suspend, just look for deeper basins around areas where there are other shacks, they are there for a reason!

There was plenty of ice and some small permanents with wheelers out where we got them last year. 6-7 inches of good ice.

Was at Longbridge today, had 3-4 inches of ice only. John at Quality told me heard they were driving on the main part of Little DL. Said there was 8" of ice. NOT ME. not yet. I would wait at least another week or two.

7 inches of ice on Saturday. Lake has dropped about 3 feet since they put the drain pipe in to lower the level. Good luck trying to drive on this winter with all of the rock now exposed next to the road not to mention the drop to the lake. No houses out yet, just portables and the guy I talked with had the same results I did. Bite was horrible. Just bass in 7 hours of fishing. Lake was pounded hard over the last 3 winters. My suggestion, find a different lake and let Grove heal.

is there any size to those bass or sunnies?

or any one catching any croppies, walleys, ect...

just looking for info about the lake, and its activity.

Sunnies have become small over the years as harvest has been HUGE. Bass range from dinks to 18 inches. A few crappies but catch them mostly by accident. I personally wouldn't go there to target crappies as you will be disappointed. Very few walleye in the lake. I have caught a couple during ice season and my friend caught one out of his canoe.

The water is pretty clear and that tends to lend itself to a night bite.

Again, I would honestly try somewhere else but you can choose whatever you would like to do. It is one of those lakes where it is "you should have been here years ago"...kinda like the Red Lake crappie bite.

P.S. the fish usually have worms in there stomachs so don't cut them open if you don't want to eat them with the meat. Also, the sunnies can be pretty speckled with the black parasite dots. Some people can't eat them, others don't mind. They are harmless to eat, just don't look good.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
