Talk about a dream season, was fortunate to have this guy show up last night. 13 pt non-typical, 200lbs even dressed, shot him at 7pm Wed night, same time a week earlier also on Wed I shot my 5 x 6 muley, Sometimes the deer gods just smile upon you!!! Check out his ears, they both seem to have been cut off at some point.

Very cool, what a unique rack. You know those little bucks with goofy racks that people always want to "cull" because of bad genetics. Well, I think you just shot one that was able to get old enough to produce one heck of a gnarly rack. Nice job.

Congrats! Nice buck. Almost looks like he's rutting with that thick neck. Wonder what the heck happened to his ears?(what???) Was he right below you?

frost bite to the ears? thats my guess. ive seen some of our farm cats before get frost bite to the tips of the ears and lose a good chunk like that

Calves will sometimes lose their ears in the winter. Sometimes they suck each others ears and then, frost bite and gone. Look just like that.

Thanks all, yes he was right below me about 12 yrds out. He didnt go 60 yrds. Nice clean and quick harvest. Took him also to the taxidermy and in 30 yrs hes never seen ears like that. Not frost bite. Best we can figure is when he was a young lad, he was laying out in some alfalfa and a haybin went over the top of him and cut his ears off. Both cuts seem to be identical. He had a very large neck also for this time of the yr. Good luck to all, hoping my 13 yrs old daughter gets a chance to file a tag this weekend on the doe hunts. Be safe!!

  • 2 weeks later...

Here is the pics of my 8 pointer from last week. I pushed that tongue in before we started taking pics. I must have only got it pushed in behind the lip. The rest of the outside pics were blurry. frown

This isn't my deer but the guy in the guy in the picture is a mentor and good friend of mine. He has been chasing this deer for four years and every year it has eluded him. Marksbigdeer.jpg

This isn't my deer but the guy in the guy in the picture is a mentor and good friend of mine. He has been chasing this deer for four years and every year it has eluded him. Lost his arm in a lineman accident several years back and doctors were shocked he didn't die so he took this deer with his crossbow at 30 yards. Scored 144

This is a couple weeks past due, but on Wednesday, October 7th I was able to take my first deer of the year with my new bow (Mathews Drenalin)! Finally got a little break from the rain we had been getting so I decided it would be a good night to sit in a tree stand for a couple hours. I bought a new bow before season this year, and so far I have about 80 hours of stand time under my belt from a 7 day bear hunt which resulted in exactly zero bear sightings, so it goes without saying that I was ready to come to full draw on something! I got off work at 5:00, headed home, fed the dog, changed into my camo, and headed out for an evening sit. I climed into my stand at about 6:00, filled with anticipation for the hour and a half of shooting light I had left. Shortly after 7:00 I hear something to my right, and slowly turn my head. I was surprised to see a doe at about 18 yards and closing the distance fast. She crossed in front of me at about 2 yards and stopped after she got past me, slightly quartering away at 6 yards. I came to full draw, told myself to "aim small" and settled my pin about 3/4 of the way up her back since it was such a steep angle, lined up with her far leg . I let the arrow fly, and watch it blow through her and stick about 6 inches into the ground. The doe spun around, jumped a fence and made it only 30 yards up the side of a corn field before tumbling over. I switched to Muzzy MX-3's this year, and although I watched her fall and tracking was not necessary, I wanted to see what type of blood trail she left. I was very pleased with the amount of blood sprayed all over both sides of the trail, although I believe any broadhead would have produced the same results, as I took out both lungs and the top quarter of the heart, with a low exit point. I discarded the used blades and cleaned up the rest of the broadhead, and it's ready for another set of blades and another deer. Now with my doe tag filled, it's time to wait for mister big! Here's a couple of pics:

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
