Made it out for the first time this evening after a few weeks off with walleyes being the target (as always). Only caught two, a 12" and 18". Missed another and had a few more eyeball my bait but wouldn't take it. I was sitting on 14 FOW and got the two using a chart/org/glo Buckshot Rattle spoon. They both are back in the lake to be caught again another day.

Went out to belle this morning and the warm front really got the eyes biting for me. Caught my four eyes in about 30 min and caught 7 total. It was nice to catch some eyes again. I was fishing in 13 FOW using a green and yellow tear drop for a setline and a orange buckshot!!!!

Good morning!

Hi everybody! I was out on Saturday and man what a nice weather day to be on the water.

I went to Hook for about an hour and had one little perch. I was looking for crappies. Has anyone had any luck out there this winter?

I then ventured to Stalhs and caught a couple of dinky sunnies and crappies. Does this lake produce any keepers anymore? I seen a guy who had kept his limit of 5 inch crappies and I just about laughed in his face, but I guess to each his own.

I then debated to go to Star or Cedar. My buddy went to Star and I went to Cedar. He caught a perch and sunnie and 10 crappies under 7 inches. I had 10 crappies between 8-10 inches and a bunch of 7 inch perch.

It seems the lakes around here get way too much fishing pressure and the fish never develop to quality size. I get frustrated by watching the wave of houses go from lake to lake and fishing them out. I realize that these lakes don't get fished out, but they get hammered so hard it makes the fishing for years to come very difficult.

I get really mad at the people that get laid off in the winter and then they camp out on any lake that is biting for weeks on end and keep everything they catch. I wish people would restrain themselves and keep the resource viable, but I know it is wishful thinking.

I would love to call them in, but most of them give their fish away or stack in the freezer. A person really doesn't know what they do with the fish. Hopefully they are not wasted.

I am sure there are plenty of guys out there that are frustrated too.

If you find that secret hole, don't tell a soul because in a matter of weeks it will be fished out and ruined for years.

Until next time, good luck fishing and please practice selective harvest.

Avid

I also went out to Hook on Sunday. Despite the wind it was an alright day to be out. We tried for pike but didn't have a flag go up and we were out there for five hours. I have seen some nice fish in the spring and summer but what's the deal when it comes to ice time. I don't even think there are fish in this lake. Five hours with a camera on one of the tip ups and not one fish. Seen more fish on camera on Schilling Lake during the contest out there than on Hook Lake.

I was out on stella the other day looking for some sunnies and ended up catching 3 small eyes (10-12 inches) and a bunch of small perch and sunnies but no keepers

I caught one walleye all season, on Minnetonka.... Unfortunately it was smaller than my middle finger so I had to let him go. I've never seen a walleye that small before. We had sucker minnows with us that were nearly twice the size of the walleye. In fact, the crappie minnow the walleye bit on was almost half his size.

I have had luck on Buffalo and Pelican, but nothing to brag about for at least the past month.

Fishing has slowed on Buffalo. You can still get crappies, but you need to sort more if you want bigger fish. I have talked with about 100 guys nobody has caught a single wayeye this winter. Many ask Where did the small eyes from last year go?

Last two evenings I tried two different lakes and only got one 10" walleye to show for it. Hardly graphing anything which really makes it discouraging.

Caught crappies last weekend on Buffalo as fast as I could drop a minnow in the water....this weekend, same spot, same bait, same hook, no fish! Going back out there tomorrow.

I hadn't been skunked all year. Got skunked last Friday night on Pelican (didn't get on the lake until after 8:30pm though), and also got skunked the next morning on Buffalo during the tourney. Saw plenty of fish but nothing liked my bait presentation enough to bite. Tried crappie minnow on a glow jig, and euro larva on a goofy minnow style jig. Also had tip-ups setup. Frustrating. Had a good time regardless.

I have to agree with Doom... All those small buffalo walleyes went into the buckets!

However there has been a local lake that started putting out some 14-17" eyes this week for me.

Too bad the DNR won't extend the season another week.

To NoodleRod and Vexguy- I know one of you but that don't matter.

The moderator here won't say it, but enough is enough. quit.

Give a report. But your Childish bickering is kind-of-old.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
