Annandale-Buffalo-Hutchinson fishing reports

Recommended Posts

Hope you guys didn't take it as I was being a A%^Hole.

Good Fishing to each of you.

Heres my report.

Pleasant was terrible, Cedar was terrible, and Pelican was terrible.

Did however manage a nice 36 1/4 pike on a local lake on the last day of the season. Tip-up with a dead smelt.

No- Me and him and a couple others hit a different lake on Sunday. They got a 35" pike before I got out there. We did get a few nice fish on Saturday out there. 7.3 Pike Won the contest. 28.5" Walleye was caught 15 minutes after the contest was over. That thing hit a 6" sucker minnow in 5' of water.

Clearwater lake- Was out there on Sunday and you could see open water on the ne side of the main island. Didn't even look close the narrows on the north. Just up by shore it was open for a good section. Be careful out there.

Clearwater lake-Was out from 11-3:30 this afternoon and found somewhat active fish in 12-14 feet of water. Lots of big fish down there but getting them to bite was a little tricky. Ended up with ten good sized gills and two crappies for dinner. Better days of fishing are just around the corner. Bring on the warm weather!!!

PELICAN LAKE-I was out there until 5 tonight and people were still driving out from the 117 access. (north) Just as I was leaving a 1 ton ford pulling a 6 x12 wheeled house went out yet. I personally went out with a wheeler. Fishing was pretty good but a lot of smaller sunfish and crappies. I did keep 8 s and 2c with the biggest 2 sunfish being 9.5 and 9.75.

PELICAN LAKE- Went out of the 119 access today. It was pretty rough and rutted, not really an excessive amount of water though. Ended up catching 1 bass, 12 sunfish, and 4 crappies. About half of the sunfish were really nice sized, crappies were just average 9 inches or so. ALL fish were released.

PELICAN LAKE- I am done driving off of the public access from 117. I'm not worried about the main lake but all that mud and water by the access is going to deterioate the ice.

It's just a matter of time before somebody goes thru by the channel. I hope everyone uses caution.

PELICAN LAKE - I think the lake is in a lull right now until the late ice bite picks up, might not be until the ice turns black and it takes some sweatin to get to the fish, who knows, but i got another lake i would like to spend more time on. Stay Safe Out There!!

I was out Sunday morning for a few hours and it was slowest it's been for me all year. Finally I put the camera down and there were schools of 'gills moving through but completely neutral-negative on various presentations. Maybe this low-pressure moving through will get the feedbags on. The last storm that came through provided some outstanding fishing. I used the 117 access and it was fine. A little rough out there though.

Clearwater lake fishing reports-Was out today in the snow and wind. Fishing was fair-good for the most part. Found a good mix of gills and crappies in 12-15 ft. most suspended well off the bottom with some of the biggest fish coming in two or three ft under the ice. In the last week I have been seeing more crappies moving into the shallow areas of the lake most have been on the small side but there have been a few that have been down right huge.

Warm spell hit today with a little wind along with it and I saw 53 on my truck thermometer. I went up to St. Cloud today and noticed people out on the lakes enjoying the sun. Anybody still hitting it hard? It looked like there is still some snow on the ice which should help walking around out there, but by the looks of the forecast it won't stick around long.

Walked out to Cedar Lake in Monticello this afternoon. Fished 7' all the way to 19' using about 25 holes to span the gap. Caught one 7" crappie in about 8' of water. Fished from 5 - 8pm. Used crappie minnows, wax worms and power grubs. The best thing about it was the hot dogs we grilled, although we forgot the can opener so we had to open the sour kraut with the ice auger, then pull it out with a needle nose hook remover thing from somebody's tackle box.

This lake had between 10-18 inches of ice, varied all over. The shore was wet and even open 5-6' out in a few places along the beach.

I'm going to try again thursday night, and maybe saturday if it still looks safe, depends on the weather.

We found a ton of garbage out there, filled up a little sled and brought it all back home. A disposable propane tank, 15 golf balls, lots of wood blocks, socks, gloves, beer cans, wrappers...

I checked out Marion, Willie and Ripley today. Ice was ok, really honeycombed but fine to walk for now. Fishing was not good. Caught lots of sunnies on ripley but they were dinks. Looked like the older fellas were filling their ice cream pails up with 5-6 inchers. Kinda ridiculous, but hey they probably taste good i guess. If we get the warmup into the 50's and around 60 toward the end of weekend and the forecasted heavy rain, I think the ice will be about gone.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
