Park Rapids area Fishing Reports

Recommended Posts

Hope to get out this weekend and take my nephew. Any luck with any panfish. I just want to catch fish so he doesn't get bored. It will be his first trip out on the ice. I just got him into fishing this past summer and he is hooked. Any help is really appreciated as I can't get up there and do any scouting and I only hit the ice twice in the area last year. Thanks! !

"Reports of 6" on Fish Hook, 10" Portage, 6" Potato, 7" Long. The houses are starting to go out and 4 wheelers have been seen as well. Good walleye bite a couple nights ago on Fish Hook."

This has been up awhile so I am sure its changed. Hopefully someone else will have more recent info as I am curious as well.

Hey, got a chance to head up to PR last minute for the next 3-4 days. No experience in the area....where is a good bait shop to hit? and, sounds like fish hook is one place to try....any tips on others near by? ...I am usually the last to drive on and not sure what the ice/slush is like so I will likely be walking and pulling an otter out so any tips on a good spot to do that w/o having to kill myself would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Check out Delany's in Park Rapids. It is right on 34, hard to miss it. Good luck, I haven't made it up there yet so I cannot really give you any places to try but if you ask in the bait shop they will pint you in the right direction.

Yhanks for the tip on the baitshop Danimal....

Looking at my map of Fish hook I only see one access...on the south side....I see references to some other access points....what are my options for access to Fish hook???

Access on fish hook is not on the south side where indicated. You are seeing the dean park "access". The river leaves the lake there and is unsafe. 1 mile north on HWY 71 from HWY 34 intersection is a landing that is the main one on the lake. The assembly grounds off county road 1 by the golf course is the other. If you have any questions at all delaneys or northern bait can help you out.

Heading to Lake George end of Feb. from Saint Paul, where can I get bait around there? Any recent reports on ice or bite?

There are a couple of bait shops in Park Rapids, you'll be either going through there or close to it. Delany's is right on 34. There might be a bait shop in Lake George itself, i cannot remember for sure though.

Big Jeff

Just got back from that area I got bait in park rapids but was told there is a place in lake gorge that a guy sell bait out of his shed and the gas station bottle shop at the park enterance also has bait. I was able to get around on most lakes with the truck but it was not fun some of them I would break through the slush and almost get stuck bring shovels and tow straps a sled would be better to get around on. Ice is plenty thick on all the lakes I was on and had a tough bite but did catch crappies, sunnies, jumbo perch and even had a walleye around 10 pounds break off when I was trying to turn it into the hole, If you can't locate fish on a lake don't be affraid to look at the map and pick another if you have a sled you can fish any lake you wanted

Walleyes sucked on fish hook tonight. Had one bite off from what seemed like a decent sized walleye, coulda been a northern. I tried jigging and dragging a leech on a straight hook. Hit most of my walleye haunts and only managed a couple northerns. Probably try it again tomorrow with a better bait assortment since I was marking lots of fish in 18-20'.

I caught a nice walleye, about 25", Fri night on a Gulp minnow in 13'. There was a private bass tourney Sat a.m. One guy said it was pretty slow; some bit early but not much after that. It's been pretty slow for walleye this year for me.

just got back from the crow wing chain. Did really well on sunnies and crappies. Caught a few bass also and a couple normans but no walleyes. Of course we never really fished for them either. Grandkids had a ball on the pontoon though.

Just returned yesterday afternoon from our annual Long Lake vacation. Walleye fishing was good for us this year compared to previous years. Our primary method used was crank bait trolling over the weeds. We would start around 8pm every evening in around 15' of water, and gradually move in shallow to 8-10 fow. #11 floaters were the lure of choice with little to no action on shad shaped cranks. The best action occurred between 9:30pm to 12am around the full moon Sunday tapering to just a few fish caught Thursday, and Friday evenings. Sizes ranged from 23" to 14", speed favored by the fish was 2.3mph. All in all a great week in God's Country!!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
