Heading up this weekend. I have never fished Cass. Anyone have any suggestion where to start or what to try this time of year. Looking for some walleyes or pannies.

There are some great spots in Allens Bay and plenty of walleyes there. Start at the weedline and work deeper until you contact fish. Fish more aggressive techniques like spinner or cranks until yuou make contact or see fish on your electronics. It the wind is or has been blowing hard check out those structure areas that it's been blowing into. Fish will hang there for a day or two after a good blow and are often shallow and aggressive.

We just got back from cass on Saturday. We caught all of our walleys trolling crancks in about 8' of water or less from about 8:00 at night tell about 8:00 in the morning. For the fun of it on 2 nights I took the wife out and we drifted over wishbone bar and caught Rock Bass as fast as the bobber hit the water. some of them were really good size. Jig heads tipped with a leach was the way to go. During mid day I would take out my boy and go to allens bay and fish the grass lines for pan fish. caught some mix there,blue gill, crappie, and rock bass. It was a good trip and even saved a few for the freezer at home.

Hope to have some good luck myself in a few days. My 8 year old grandson was about 5 oz short of a MN state record for a rock bass a few years ago. Caught the thing on a Scooby Doo pole on Wishbone Bar. You should have seen that purple pole bend in half as he fought that beast! Too funny. I can not believe that they even keep state records for Rock Bass but they sure are fun on a hot afternoon when you want to drown a few minnows!

Was on Pike Bay last week.

Had a pretty good week in the area. The weather was decent both for vacation and for fishing. Pike Bay walleye action was okay for the evening and night bite. The morning and daytime was slow as expected. SOme guys were able to do well in the early early morning. Like 4am to 7am. I got out a few times at night and caught walleys each time. Trolling the bars in 4-8 FOW with perch color #5 raps. I also picked up a few on crawfish cranks. I heard of others getting some on lindys and spinners just before sunset in 6-10 FOW. I marked a ton of fish in 10-14 feet during the morning outtings. There were stacked and if you can find a spot that doesnt hold weeds in that depth you should be okay.

The perch were all over but size is tough to come by.. Some guys got some sunnies as well. No Skis that I heard of but I did see quite a few pike get caught.

We have to keep track of rock bass records so genegodawa has something to shoot for.

I know some guys who had so many Rockies in 1 1/2 hrs that one of the guys got bored after an hr. and stopped fishing for the last half hr.....and the boat was anchored the whole time. They figure they caught one every 30 seconds for an hr. and a half straight.

That was the origin of the saying "you may never catch fish again like this in your life". Even though they have got very, very many Rockies each yr, they never did get so many in such a short time again.

Dead tired, doing a mountain of laundry so I decided to check in with my report from our two weeks in Cass Lake. This marked our 23 year and by far it was our best year of fishing. Our family had our entire limit of take home walleyes (18-20 inch range) within the first 5 days of our trip. We also did two fish frys over the two weeks, we usually have enough fish for only one fish fry. I had not even been out with Brian my guide yet.

I did use Brian the second week for perch and filled both my ticket and my wifes ticket of perch and they are simply outstanding, all in the 10.5 to 13 inch range, biggest topped out at 13.5! Pike fishing was slow though I did manage to take three home, all good eater size and I also kept 2 giant rock bass and a 4 lb large mouth.

The real success of the trip was at the Casino. Having closed their poker room at the Palace Casino in Cass, I moved my business to Northern Lights in Walker on the first day of rain in Cass. I was at the poker table for about 20 minutes when I was dealt a full house Aces full of tens and got beat by Aces full of Queens. Normally this would be very bad and I did lose a pot of about $40 BUT I won a bonus pot they had called a Bad Beat Pot which had over $10,400 dollars in it. I got 50% of that so I took home a check for $5240! The guy who beat me took home $2620 and the other 8 guys at the table took home $325 each. Needless to say, I was the most popular guy in the poker room that day!

Two other trips to Northern Lights resulted in wins of $165 and $100 and a final day mini trip to the Palace resulted in a $20 win at the slots for a grand cash total for the trip of just over $5500.

Golf was a huge success as well. Golfed Long Bow (thanks Pier) the first week and won by six strokes and golfed Greenwood the second week and won by 10. I would strongly recommend Long Bow to anybody looking for a great scenic well kept course near Cass. Just a tad pricy compared to the dirt farm courses that surround Cass but WELL WORTH the money. Cost $46 per person with an electric cart for 18 holes. Great course.

Baseball was great too with my beloved Pale Hose in first place when we got there AND in first place when we left!

Weather was teriffic. Mostly low 80's, cool and perfect sleeping weather with the windows open! It don't get much better than that fellas!

Putting 25% of my winnings into a CD to pay for the taxes (yes they did 1099 me) and the rest goes into a 1 year CD to pay for next years two week trip!

Trip of a lifetime this year!

Wow is all I can say, not the fishing but the time you had at the casino. About time someone wins there... Glad you had a good time in the north woods. Next year I will have to get up there when you are there.

Think of it this way. The money I won has already been earmarked to pay for my trip next year so it is the highlight! LOL

Granted we do have 12 beautiful walleye vacuum sealed in our freezer that go from 18-20 inchs and we have tons of perch in the 10.5 to 13 inch range as well.

We have always said that the fish we take home are the bonus, the cherry on top of the sundae, not the only reason we go up there. Everything we do while we are up there is the real highlights and winning that money just gave me another year of highlights!

I suppose that is ONE way to "spin" it.....however in my mind, the fact that you even go the a casino while on vacation up there, SPOILS IT.

The casino is where you go when it rains! It rained all day and we made the trip to Walker where I hit the jackpot. I am a spoiled city kid who does not enjoy fishing in the rain in a rainsuit. I would rather hit the casino and wait for the warm sunny days to fish in my shorts and T shirts!

I did get my fair share of afternoon naps during our two weeks. Nothing like a two hour siesta during the hottest period of the day to get you ready for dinner and a night of great fishing! God, do I love vacations!

Fishing report for Sept. 18-19th. Just a quick trip, so we didn't have a lot of time for exploring.....Tried casting to our favorite reedbeds, got 1 nice Bass. tried trolling raps Sat. night....got 2 pike just before sundown, with NO eyes . Got into some decent perch Sat. afternoon....kept about 17 between 9-10 1/2 inches. Tried walleyes again Sunday morning (GREAT WEATHER)......found some about 20.5 feet down, but couldn't get them to bite. Went back to perch, and after MUCH searching found a SWARMING school in a small area. They were mostly 6-7 inch fish, but we managed to catch 11 9-10 1/2 inchers out of there before we ran out of minnows AND TIME. Love Cass Lake, and even though the BITE and locations weren't what we were expecting, had a great time.

It's been pretty quite in here so I'll add a fishing report from our guy trip over the MEA break on Cass Lake.

First off the weather was FANTASTIC!!!!! It's been a while since we've had such nice weather to fish in the second half of October. That being said, even the fish liked the weather. We had very good fishing for walleyes and crappies during our stay.

Walleyes, and a few pike, were caught at night trolling cranks in 4-12 feet of water. Both stickbaits and shad baits got bit. Color or brand wasn't a big factor. Trolling speeds from 1.8-2.5 mph worked to trigger fish. Water temps started at 53.5 on Wednesday and drop a bit to 51 degrees Saturday night. We caught a lot of eyes from 12-21" with some bigger fish as well. The biggest was a fat 27" eye.

The crappies seem to be in transition. We got blanked on our first trip to the crappie hole but by the next day some fish started showing up in 18-26 feet of water. Small jigging spoons tipped with a small chunk of meat got bit most but some were caught on jigs and gulp as well. The 1/16 oz lindy rattling flyer spoon was the hot lure for the slabs. I did best on glow red and perch.

Not much pressure on Cass Lake right now. Lots of open spot to fish. In 4 nights of fishing me were alone of the lake after 10:30 pm on all but one night. And then it was only one boat on the other side of the lake.

SHHHHHHHH, we don't want anybody from wisconsin to find out about it. To be honest, we've only been able to drive around on the lakes with trucks for 3 weeks. The fishing was awesome until the end of last week(cold front) With 40's all week and 50"s this weekend they'll be hitting hard by Wed. I'd say.

The crew made a trip to the Cass Lake chain this past weekend and guess what...

You got it. It rained almost the entire weekend. No matter we fished through it and found a good panfish bite as well as a decent walleye bite both early and late in the day pitching jigs or trolling cranks. Sunfish, crappies and walleyes were all up in the shallows and as long as you found where they were they were fairly catchable.

Sorry, not a good weekend for pictures due to the rain.

Can't wait until we make another trip to Cass the middle of June.

Just got back from a beautiful week on Cass Lake! Boated some very nice eyes. Most were ranging from 16-19"! A very nice average. There were some young up and comers also. The biggest girl was 25". We boated a few nice northern also. One was 32". The highlight was my 6 year old catching his first two eyes. One was 16.5" and the next was 17.5"! It was nice to meet the new Birch Villa resort owners. Welcome Tony and Sabrina! Can't wait until next year!! I didn't catch any crappie so I left them all for Geno! Good luck Geno! BTW...Cubs beat the crew tonight! Maybe they'll start to win a few games!

So far, so good....pannies are on fire. And our eve walleye trips have been successful too. Raining all day today, so we are shootin' pool in the lodge.

I keep telling Tony he needs to put up a suggestion box now, but he's not into that this early in his ownership....a decent pool player and a great guy and we wish him well....so long as he let's me start smoking in the cabin. Nyuk, nyuk.

Now we move on to Perching and then Pike and maybe a half-day for Musky...but I don't want one of those beasts in the boat with me.

So, mid-week report is it's been windy, but panfish are making the week for us so far and walleye are cooperating in the 7-9' range in the eves for us.
