FM Get Together-Medicine Lake

Recommended Posts

Well, as of now its in its preliminary stages. But so far I'm thinking of having the get together on the weekend of July 10th. Fishing on Medicine peaks early/mid July so this would be the best time. But what I'd like to see is some ideas from you fellow FMers. All questions, suggestions, and queries are welcome! If you want to contact me in a more personal setting. My email is Melor1917 at yahoo dot com.

Med Man,

I'd like to get together for an outing on Medicine, but I don't have a boat. If someone has an extra seat that weekend and would allow me to tag along, let me know.

Thanks.

Count me in. You planning on using French Park as the place to meet?

I was thinking that West Medicine Lake Park would be a good meetin place. There's lots of places to beach you're boat. They've got fishing docks, picnic tables, bbq grills, a nice play ground if you have kids. This park has pretty much everything. I'm thinking that we should have a meeting time. Moby and I would get out on the lake around 5:30am. But I'm sure that most of you wouldn't be getting out there that early. I'm thinking that we could meet at the park around 10 or something?

This sounds awesome, but I think I will be fishing in Canada that weekend. I can't say I am sad about it because, well... I'll be in CANADA, but I am bumbed that I won't get to meet all you guys. Have a blast and catch some lunkers!!

Sounds like a blast MedMan, but I'll be up on LOW during that time.

This is a great chance to learn a lot about Medicine Lake, as well as catch some fish. MedicineMan knows his stuff about the lake and the other fishermen joining him are top-notch! If you are looking to have a lot of fun and get in on some action than this is the event for you!

Thanks a lot Matt, too bad you're going to be gone doing that time. But I'm sure you'll have a blast up at LOW.

It sure would be fun to get together especially with the resident expertise. Unfortunately I will also be in the LOW area.
Matt I sure hope you pound them and get some great pics from LOW.

Like you said med man we'll probably be there earier than most. Due to a wife that doesn't fish and the amount of recreational traffic, 10-11am is generally around the time I get the heck off the lake. We'll see what happens.

Joe,

Thanks for the offer, I might have to take you up on that. You're right, I stopped in to buy some bait last winter.

I plan on getting a boat next spring and will probably fish Medicine quite a bit since I work in Maple Grove and live in Rogers. Medicine is pretty close by so I'll be sending some business your way.

Thanks for the offer on the boat. I'll let you know.

I believe that I can make this too.

Speaking of Medicine. I was there last night with my good friend Lance. The wind was tough for my jon boat but we found some place out a the wind that made it somewhat possible.

I fished a spinnerbait most of the time. I got two nice 15-16" bass and missed a pike and some other short strikes (No trailer hook though. Lance was switching baits and found that a fluke was good for a bit. Then that died all of a sudden. His big bass was 17.5" and he got 1 about 15" and baby. We got some in the pads and some on the edge and 1 away from the pads. Kinda here and there.

Total bass = 6 in about 2.5 - 3 hours.

Anything after the July 4th weekend should work for me as long as it's a Friday or Sunday. I have yet to make it out there.

Autumn, I don't think Joe would enjoy having a bunch of drunkin' roudy fisherman running around his place. But that would be fun to see though. grin.gif

Nothing is written in stone as of now. I'll lay everything down when I get back from vaction on the 25th. I don't know if I wanna have a get together out ther on saturday or both saturday and sunday. I am leaning more towards having it both days. I'm usually out there both days anyways so its not going to kill me. grin.gif

Med Man,

Would love to, but I believe I am booked somewhere else (either guiding or a family requirement). You are right about the July bite on Medicine....

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!
