Been a few weeks since I've been on Medicine.... is the launch getting really shallow now? Also, any descent fishing lately? I'm planning on venturing out there for a while tonight possibly.

phoenix, the launch isn't too bad. The water level came up 3-4 inches after the rain we had. As for fishing, the Bass have been biting fairly aggressively. The Northerns are finally starting to pick up. The Sunnies, as usual are hitting anything that moves.

MedMan, Thanks for the info... now I just have to finish fixing my trailer... went out on Labor Day with a friend out on Green Lake in Western MN, and my buddy **** near backed my truck into the lake... Ended up shoving the boat off the trailer, and breaking one of the rear planks the boat rests on.. (doh). So if you see a boat sittin in the water by the launch, with someone workin on a trailer in the parking lot cussing and swearing... its me... lol.

Nice fish medman! What kinda colors have the bass been hitting on lately? I usually use a 4" pumpkinseed bungee w/mushroomhead jig.... seems to do the job.. When I was out by my hometown a few weeks ago was finally able to pick up some scum frogs.... getting anxious to try em out... been hearing a lot of good things about them.

Went out this past Saturday and Sunday. Fishing was pretty good for the most part. Caught 14 Bass Saturday morning. Caught 9 Bass Sunday morning, but I did some how break the tip off of my favortie rod. mad.gif So that kinda bummed me out. But overall it was a good weekend to get out.

Nice fish report, again, MedMan! But too bad about your rod. Maybe it's the lake? The last time out on Medicine I also broke a rod. If it happens to be a Fenwick, take it to Joe's in St. Paul and have them send it in for you.

Hmmmm, maybe it is the lake. I know 2 other guys that have broken their rods out there in the past 2 weeks. No, its not a Fenwick. Its a Gander Mountain rod(its the rod in the pictures above). It'll be easy to fix , its just kind've a bummer though.

Gander also told me this spring that they replace all their rods for free, so you should bring it in there!

MrBig, I called up Gander today and they said that they'd replace the rod free of charge. Thanks for giving me that little bit of info! cool.gif

No problem! It's policies like those that make a retailer stand out. It's always great to get a new rod -- Free!

Went out yesterday, fished from 8-10. I ended up with 6 Bass, lost just as many. I also caught some large Perch on #7 Countdowns.

Well, went out today from 9-7. Fishing from 9-12 sucked big time. I got absolutely nothing. I moved to a bunch of different areas, tried a dozen different lures, nothing! Then BAM, caught 14 Bass right after another from 12-1. After that I was able to pick up here and there for the rest of the day. The Northerns are really starting to come on as well. I saw with the Aqua-Vu a good dozen Northerns patrolling the west end of one point. In all; I ended up with 20 Bass, 5 Northerns, 2 Walleyes, and a few panfish.

MedMan,

You are my hero. Medicine is a great lake and I have caught a lot of nice pike out there but I have dedicated my summer to muskies this year. Keep up the good work! I think you should lobby the DNR to put Muskies into Medicine!!!

Haha....thanks Jackpot.
Sorry, I can't help ya with getting Muskies into Medicine. The guys I know in the Fisheries department don't have much clout. Those kind've decisions are made by the higher-ups.

Well went out this weekend. Ran into Mr.Big saturday moring. I caught 5 Bass and 5 Northerns saturday morning. Sunday on the other hand REALLY sucked! I only caught 1 Northern in the first 2 hours, then at 9 I caught 3 Bass. I couldn't even find fish on the aqua-vu! I did see a ton of suspended fish though, they seemed to be hanging 4-5 feet off of the bottom at the basin of the islands.

At least Saturday was a great day to spend on the water. And I got to meet the famous Medman! I only caught a couple, but was still a beautiful day to be out.

Hey guys,
I went out Yesterday (Tuesday) with Med Man and boy did he put me on the fish. There will be photos soon. In 3 and 1/2 hours I caught 8-9 Bass between 16.5 and 20.5 inches and a bonus 32" Northern! All C+R.
The"piggies" were happening!
Med Man for Pres.!!

Hi all,
Hey MedMan, we met on the SW rock hump back in Aug/Sept (grey boat, grey motor, grey hair). Just now getting around to posting here. Does the water ever clear to the point that you can AquaVu the hooks you see on a graph?
Been jigging crappies lately. Usually get a mean green visitor or two (32 is the biggest so far). I usually keep a few 8-10 inchers and throw back all the bigger ones. What's the DNR say about keeping crappies here? There seems to be an awful lot of 'em. I've heard that they can be tough on the forage.

Yeah yeah, you out fished me Ole. But I only had my line in the water 25% of the time compared to you. Plus, who put you on the fish!!!! grin.gif

Hey Lee, good to see ya! Yeah, the water is always clear enough to see the same fish on the aqua-vu as I see on my graph. But mid-late ice and mid-may would be when the water is at its clearest. As far as your question pertaining to Crappies. I don't know the DNR's exact stance on keeping Crappies out of Medicine. I only know the opinions of the fisheries specialist I know. As for my opinion. I would throw anything back over 10", expecially Black Crappies. There's not many White Crappies in Medicine. But the White Crappies are large. I've never caught or seen a White Crappie smaller than 10". On the other hand Medicine has a very high population of Black Crappies. Most of these fish are between 6-8". The reason the Black crappies are this small is due to too many fish, not enough forage (I.E stunting). So in this situation with the Crappies being the way they are, taking a few of them home would actually be helping the size sturture for Black Crappies.

Thats what I thought. I did catch a 14" white crappie a while back, but blacks over 12" aren't where I'm lookin'. Have you figured out those suspended fish? (I saw 'em between humps on Monday and just left em alone). I've been catching lots of 8&10" walleyes lately - good sign for the future.

In fact maybe I'll lean toward the 6-8" size and just keep a few more. I can't see at all below about 15 feet without the light on the AVu, and I HATE viewing with the light on. Gets me a little motion sick wink.gif

Hey Lee, is there any way you could take pics of those Walleye's you're catching? My buddies at the DNR would love to see proof that people are catching 8-10" Walleyes. The Walleye's in that size range would be from last years stocking. And if you catching lots of them, that shows that there's a high survival rate among the Fryling they stocked. If you catch any Walleye's that are 5" or less, I suggest you keep them and send them to the DNR. Because any Walleye's that would be that small either came from natural production, or bucket biology. They could preform some test and find out exactly where they came from. And if they did come from natural production, thats absolutly great news!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
