Where to go for opener

Recommended Posts

This is the first time we are going out for the opener where can i catch fish but not the crowd? thinking of white bear?

If you dont want the crowds .. charge up your batteries and hit the inner metro lakes(trolling motor only).

Pull Lindy's with a leech between the pavillion and the north side beach on Harriet in 14'-25' of water, or near the rose gargen fishing dock, stay close to weeds. Nokomis can be good under the bridge bouncing jigs around. Calhoun can be great fishing all the *traditional structures* with live bait usually being choice this early in the year... fish shallow before deep.

Any popular lake around the metro will have excessive traffic on the opener.

I agree, if you have good batteries go fish the inner city lakes. I'm going out on Medicine....naturally. If you enjoy catching Northerns as much as Walleye, head out to Medicine. There's never a crowd out there on opener, plus you can also pick up a few Walleye's out there as well.

TYMAN,the big red star on the map is where Medicine is. Medicine is just west of 169, east of 494, and north of 394. I'll be going out Saturday for sure. I'll most likely be going out again on Sunday as well. All depends on th weather and how tired I am.(I deliver papers on the weekend) So if I go out I'll either go out at the crack of dawn, or I'll sleep untill 1-2 then go out on Sunday. But if you wanna meet up I'll be more than happy to help you.

Medicine is a good lake for almost anything. Its a great Northern lake, its not unusual to catch a 34+inch Northern. Its also one of the best Bass lakes in the Twin Cities. Lots of Sunnies and Crappies. The Walleye's are finally taking hold in Med after 5 years of stocking. I've had fairly good luck catchin' eye's in Medicine. But note: every Walleye I do catch, I release right away. I think others that do catch a Walleye in Medicine should do the same. There's only so many and we should help them out by releasing them.

what do ya use for the pike and are the panfish eaters?

You can use almost anything and catch Pike in Medicine. Crankbaits and spinners are my favorite lures. Deep Diving Reef Runners are my favortie Pike lure, stick to natural or dark colors. There are some decent panfish out there. You might have to weed through them to get a meal, but you can diffenetly get a meal.

The majority of the Pike are in 4-14 feet of water. I have seen them in 1 feet of water, then all the way down to 30 feet of water. The DNR sprayed weedkiller in Medicine early this week, I don't know how fast this chemical will kill the Curly Leaf Pondweed. So the fish could still be in the weeds, or they could have moved around since then. I'll find out this saturday. Oh yeah, will you be out in a boat TYMAN?

If you need tackle, bait, or even some grub. Stop by Harty's on the south end of the lake.

TYMAN, I'm guessing that you're asking what kinda boat I'm in. I'm gonna be in a 14' orangish-redish Lund with a 30 horse Nissan. Its an older boat, but its been modified. It's got a deck and bow mount trolling motor with floor and red carpet. The entire inside of the boat is red. You really can't miss it! As far as water clarity, the water has become really clear. I'm guessing that you could see bottom in 6-8 feet of water.

The lures that work well for Northerns also work well for Walleye's. That is: Beatle Spins with a leech, minnow, or artifical baits. Or an inline spinner or anyother type of spinner bait. Crankbaits also work very well for both. Stick to natural colors or dark colors. For panfish, small spinner baits work well, Creme Worms are exellent Crappie and Sunnie lures. 1/4-1/2oz Daredevils work well both Northerns Walleye's and Crappies. Then you have the usual panfish lures: Small Jigs, bobber fishing with live bait. As far as bait shops, there is a Baitshop on the lake. Harty's Baitshop is on the southeast end of the lake. If you're on the lake and you need bait, just tie up to the end of his dock and stop in his shop.

ok sounds good do u know =what stage of spawn the crappies and sunnies are in? also what would an average day be like i.e. 30 sunnies 10 crappieas 20 northern 100 walleyes (i wish wink.gif) and what kind of structure will we be fishing ?Crappies/sunnies: , northern: , walleyes: ,

TYMAN, I really couldn't tell you what an average day would be. I never go after panfish, I know where they are, I just don't fish them. 20 Northerns a day isn't out of the question. But if you get into that many they're gonna be smaller 20-24in fish. I don't go for quantity, I go for quality. Usually when I go out I'll average 6-8 Northerns, but they're almost always 30+ inches. 100 Walleye's in a day, HA! smile.gif Thats half the Walleye population in Medicine. The most I've caught in a day is 6. Well, I've caught more than that in a day, but they were the size of my hand.

As for structure and location. Thats what I'm going to be doing tomorrow.... finding them! I was out last thursday and I found out where the fish were and everything but....The DNR sprayed chemicals earlier this week to combat the Curly Leaf Pondweed. 90% of the fish I found were using this weed as cover. But I don't know at what stage of decay the weeds are in. They could be completely gone, or they could still be healthy and die off next week....I don't know. If the weeds are decaying, they would use up oxygen as they die off. This would push the fish out of the weeds. One of two things could happen. The fish could be suspending out in open water relating to nothing. Or they could have moved out too some of the islands or they are using any other type of structure in the lake. All I have to say is, you better have a good map and a good depth finder!

Medicine is an amazing Bass lake! You can very easily pick up a few 6+ pound fish. Most people catch the big bass in early June untill early July. Once mid-July hits most people have a harder time catching them. But once again, you CANNOT target Bass untill May 29th.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
