Long Lake (N/B) Dock Fishing

Recommended Posts

Lost, shoot me an e-mail at [email protected] when you get a chance. Don't know what kind of tackle box you have, but I keep all my panfish stuff in one plastic bin in the box so I can just pull it out & bring it with.

Guys, you can access Pike with a pretty short walk...it's really not that far. Most of the lake is private, except for the south end. I think the best way to fish this lake would be with a canoe if you've got one.

I didn't think anyone knew about Pike lake tucked away behind the church. About 10 years ago you could catch your limit of Crappies there. Today I know there are tons of Carp and bullheads. Usually in July when it hot outside we catch Tiger muskies right out from the big sewer. Thoese are a fun catch

Heading out there Sunday afternoon to see what can be caught. Might scout the area on Friday and cast a couple times. But I might also head over to Long Lake and cast from the dock.

Thanks for the info about the south side of the lake! Will definitely need to make sure I don't trespass.

On a good note, I've seen several people voluntarily picking up trash in the park and by the train bridge on Long Lake while I was out running. If you are one of those people I've seen, you should be applauded.

What are you guys hoping to catch in Pike or Long??

I might drag the boat over to long this weekend and fish some carp in the river by the rail road bridge. I just want to feel something on the end of the line!

Hey So Haaad, did you get over to Wabasso for the late ice season??

So Haaad or whomever,
How do you go about getting to that "train bridge"? I was at the park last night doing a little carp fishin and some old guy told me that there were a lot of carp down by some old bridge on long lake, Is this the bridge that you are speking of? He said that it gets real narrow through there. Is it public property and can you fish there? Is it an easy walk? Would I park at the beach or the baot lauch?
Any info would be great.
Oh yeah...
We didnt catch anything yesterday evening.
Thanx,

Big island Dude,
The train bridge is on the NE end of the lake. If going by boat, you go through the channel to the N end and stay along the E shore until you see the bridge. I believe it's where Rice creek comes in from the N.
Not sure if it's legal to fish there or not.

I see you're from Marcel. Small world....I have a place in Wirt, on Bass lake. Island's a beautiful lake, though I've never fished it.
I live near Long Lake....grew up shore fishing it as a kid in the 60's and 70's.
We used to get some nice northerns back than.
Good luck !

Twitter,
Whenever I fish the bigfork I usually put in at Dora and pull out at Wirt.I have been all over this great nation of ours and hands down the Grandrapids to Bigfork area is the most beautiful place I have seen. Yes, it is a small world.
I do not have a boat down here in the cities and am currently restricted to shore fishing I would like to get in on some carp today or tommorow so if anyone can point me in the right derection that would be great.

I saw there were a bunch of carp in the river above the railroad bridge on Tuesday night. One way you could access the river is over by the school and walk downstream. Take Long Lake road north, then take a right on...I believe it's Poppyseed Dr.??? (Right before you get to the school). You'll find a parking area at the end of this road.

Big Stevie-
You know, I didn't even make it over to Wabasso for the late ice season. I got addicted to fishing 'cats over on the Horseshoe chain, and was there any chance I got. Next year I'll try Wabasso, right??? smile.gif

Big.... at the end of Poppyseed walk straight in about 25 feet there is a bridge really it is two culverts. It is part of the park and not posted. I seen tons of carp from shore. I could have just reached down and grabbed them from shore.

There's no fishing allowed within 100 feet of the railroad bridge from the Long Lake side. Your best bet would be to launch your boat and fish as close to the bridge as you can within the legal distance.

I'll be out there tomorrow (Friday). Not sure about Sunday due to the weather forecast. If you've got room on your boat, you should be able to find me at the fishing dock. I'd love a ride!

I'm planning on going for crappies but wouldn't mind some carp action either. I've got an online fishing photo contest I'm in and need to get my first entry listed!

Hey Lost,

I might think about joining you guys for your Sunday adventure. Pike or Long... which ever. Where were you gonna meet? 2PM right? Weather permitting... I could maybe bring the boat. I've just got the 14 footer down with me now, so I could only fit two more. It would be fun to meet some of you guys.

Anyhow, judging by the time on your posts you spend most of your computer time at night. So I'm not sure you'll be able to get back to me in time as I only do my posting while I'm at work. smile.gif Well, if it works for me on Sunday I'll see if I can find you guys. If not, let us know how you do.

Stevie, we were going to meet along the south side of Pike off the frontage road & just do some shore fishing. But I'd be game to pull out the boat & hit Long as well and/or. Haven't had the boat out yet, so it could be a rowing adventure. grin.gif

I'll probably just hook up the boat & bring it along anyway, in case the shore fishing on Pike doesn't yield anything, we can hop over to Long.

I scouted Pike Lake this morning. There's a park trail that leads along the south side and 694. Not many areas to really fish from.
You guys might want to check it out first. It's easy to get to.

I went over to Long Lake and fished from the dock for a little while. There were a couple others there. One person was catching bullheads and northerns on euro-larvae. It would be great to actually get out in a boat. I've never fished any other part of Long Lake.

E-mail me with contact info or to get my cellie-phone number.

Stevie, I have a Jeep Cherokee with a tiny 12' Alumacraft. Sounds like Lost didn't find much at Pike today, if there's nothing to be had there I'd be good for moving over to Long Lake (never been on it).

Maximum,

Thanks for the info. I hope the weather holds out. It would be fun to get out and meet you guys. What kind of rig do you drive? ...that will help me find you guys. I've got a dark grey chevy with a camo 14ft boat. Hopefully I'll see you Sunday at 2PM.

If we've got two boats (Maximum's and Stevie's) then maybe we can get all of us out on the water at the same time?

Thanks for reminding me! I gotta find my life jacket either today or tomorrow morning.

Max & Lost... It was good to meet you guys today. We kept 16 sunnies cleaned and ate. They sure were good too. Hey Lost didn't know you were still there when we left or would have found you to say goodbye. The girlfriend said she helped you pull in a log of a fish. I have a picture of you pulling in that monster at the end of the post here.

FYI:
during the summer time, all the docks on teh west part of the lake, the southern portion are typically good for bass too. there is also usually some downed trees that they hide in as well. Nothing typically huge, but i have caught 2-3 pounders every so often. might be worth a try later on in the season sicne you all are fired up about this lake. good luck!

Hey guys,

Great posts on here! I am wondering if there is an actual boat landing on Long Lake? I am interested in the carp....yes, the carp. smile.gif

Also, how do you know where you can fish, and where you can't fish? Has anyone called the DNR about this lake to find out exactly where you can and can't go?

GOOD LUCK!

Hey Doop,
There is a boat launch at Long Lake, Its right next to the fishing dock. I know they have a sign posted there about the wake on the lake, not sure what the times are.
If your looking for carp, I went to that spot over the weekend that I think LOST was talking about, off LL rd and Poppyseed. There is a creek back there with tons of carp. Friday there were 2 guys fishing and said they had caught 1 carp about 10 pounds using corn. There must of been about 200 carp in this little aream you may want to check that spot out.

It was nice meeting you for the 2nd time, Dan. smile.gif Yes, your girlfriend did help me out. The "log of a fish" was at least 10 feet long. I'm surprised my line didn't snap! You did find a decent location. After you two went over to the dock, I took over your hot spot. Just about every throw in with my 1" curlytail had a bite within 10 seconds. I caught a few bass in there as well.

It was nice meeting Maximum for the 1st time.
I don't think Maximum did very good. We shoulda kicked you guys out of your spot so he could catch something.

Now to meet BigStevie if he actually makes it out there Wednesday. I'll be there since I cancelled my Tuesday plans.

Good to see you guys! Since you're both Long Lake regulars, if I make it up "north" (I'm a St. Paulite) I'll be on the lookout for y'all. And Lost, didn't you see that bass I caught? It might half been at least an inch & a half.

Haha Maximum! I thought that was a minnow at first! After my 3rd and 4th look, I knew it was a bass. I caught a few cigars actually. Largest was about 5 inches long.

Wish we would have had a better bite. I wonder what it would have been like over at the playground and beach area. Shall we try that sometime?

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .
    • SkunkedAgain
Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
