Tiger muskies

Recommended Posts

My .02 would say go to Cedar in Scott Co. I mainly fish for panfish and have quit going to this lake because of the Tigers that get stocked in there. I once caught 7 of them in one day trolling for eyes, although none was over 44 inches, but they were a lot of fun on 6 pound test.

sorry..got on this post late. To reference an earlier statement about not fishing a brooding lake. If there were a problem...like a decline in the number or size of the fish, I would assume the DNR would address it. I agree with the replica philosophy...and as soon as I get that 50+"er..the order will be in. I've never fished the lake mentioned, it just seemed like an extreme reaction to a problem that might not exist. There are already enough people out there trying to get us to stop fishing on some lakes as well as all together...lets not help them along. I think muskie anglers should be applauded, the fishing and quality of fishing is improving every year..we're doing something right guys, lets keep it up.

I would say there is a huge difference in replica mounts. Some look as phony as a three dollar bill and some look like the real thing.

That's why you research your taxidermist. I've also seen real fish mounts that look just awful. When I had a duck mounted I went to three different taxidermists and chatted with them as well as looking at their work. What they said about their approach to their work was almost as important as the work itself. I've heard nothing but good things about the "Artistic Anglers" in Duluth. I don't know from experience, however. I'm still in search of that 50+ muskie. But when I do I can guarentee I will do my best to get it back in the water alive and healthy. When I get back home I'll be making the call to them for my replica.

Dear Trailblazer and others,

See what I mean about controversy? Actually, I'm a full time musky fisherman too. I release all my fish and most of the time I don't debarb my hooks. My old man started about 15 years ago when he got too old to do all the bending and lifting. He is so good with his lures and lake knowledge that he still catches lots of fish but does most of it sitting down! It's downright comical to see the old guy slide over and just quickly release a fish without fighting the barbs. His fish recover much faster. The way I do it, I spend a lot of time bent over the side with my "plumbers crack" showing. Hopefully, I'll get smarter when I'm his age. Seriously, the one time we should all do it is when we are at remote locations, away from medical care. A barbless hook never gives you any trouble trying to remove it and may save you a long trip to a doctor.

Until next time, Keep on casting!

I think the replicas at Thornes Bros. are all done by Artistic Angler. Go down there and check them out -- Very NICE!!!!!!!!

I think they (DNR with Muskies Inc.) have made Elk a "RELEASE ONLY" lake? I think Rebecca might be next?

  • 1 month later...

Last year I caught a 35" tiger musky right underneath hiway 36 over on Keller Lake.

In case you don't know where Keller Lake is, its on the intersection of Highway 36 and 61.

Keller has some hugh muskies and northerns. I don't think anyone fishes for them at all because everyone I run into is either fishing for panfish or spearing CARP..

I wouldn't doubt that one bit, they are stocked in Gervais which has an open waterway through spoon lake. They are also stocked in Phalen but there is a little lock in the stream between Keller and Phalen.

I haven't seen this posted yet but anybody that is really serious about fishing Musky & Big Pike should really consider investing in a Cradle these units are much easier on the Fish & allow you to leave the fish completely in the water while removing the hooks & it secures the fish so that the fish cannot harm itself in the process also.

Just my .02

Good Luck
Chris

I agree with how easy a cradle is on the fish.

But what about the Guy or Gal that fishes alone? These things take 2 people to use. They are also dangerous because the guy that is putting the fish in the cradle has his head with in inches of the lure and that thing can come flying out of the fishes mouth at anytime. I used a cradle for a couple years, and my brother almost took lure in the face that way.

In my opinion anyone serious about fishing Musky really should invest in a BIG net, you can still keep the fish in the water while unhooking them and it's a lot safer for the fisherman too.

Just my 2 pennys...

Dump the cradle and invest in a Big Kahuna Frabill net. Simply net the fish, keep the net/fish in the water, unhook and let 'em go......That easy folks!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
