Hello, was up there this weekend. Kinda chilly and very windy on Saturday. Had to set the house up so we only hit 3 spots. Got a few perch at each stop with the last being the best, 1st stop up by Perch bar out of Highbanks. Got quite a few but running small. Kept only 3 in 2 hours, caught 20+. Moved towards Big Island and tried to go off road and got stuck once. Caught 15 and kept 5. Again smaller fish and sorting required. The last stop just south of Big Island on a secret spot and I thought we found them. Got 9 Jumbos in 20 minutes around 3-4 pm. Thought we were into them now. We were in 22-26 ft. After the 9 it stopped as fast as it started. Of course the 9 lb Northern we caught had something to do with it. Also caught 3 eyes. Total for the day 17 keeper perch. Sunday was a lot better weather wise but again caught a lot of smaller perch and only kept 5 in 3 hours. Then had to clean up the cabin and head home. If you go up bring an extension. Some spots could not get through, Some spots we had a couple of inches to spare. We fished between 22 and 32 FOW. Perch colored jigs seemed to work the best, but we only had 2 people. This weekend is Highbanks last weekend b-4 Kim has her Baby. Still time to get in on the baby pool. Highbanks has good roads leading to various spots. Off road travel is still 50 50 On Sunday Rick had 21 Small planes come in and land for a couple of hours and then took off. They had a make shift runway right in front of our cabin, so we watch them take off. Felt like there was an airport close by.

We went out of Nodak's and there was no issue at all. The roads were perfect but travel off the road is difficult.

3 of us headed up out of Highbanks on Saturday and went out in the Zoomers area.A little cold but the fishing kept us warm,we ended up with 38 fish most all were 9 to 11 inches.Didnt have alot of small fish to speak of.Went back on Monday and the bite didnt stop all day, brought back 30 and let countless fish go.Tuesday we started a little slower but things picked up around 10am left the ice early in the afternoon .All these fish were caught in a 70yard area at the base of a breakline around 25 fow.Fatheads and shiners were the main bait, except Monday where you could thrown anything down.Spoons, jiggin raps, plain hooks on a slip bobber all worked well.If yer headin up that way, bring lots o bait. GOOD TIMES...... grin.gif

Our roads are remaining in good condition. Warm temps this week have compressed snow cover making for easier off road mobility. Groups that have been fishing in the Zoomers and Big Island area east of Raven's have been doing well in 25-28' of water. Hole hopping is the proven tactic that is working. Fatheads continue to be the choice bait. Our lodge will be open until March 17th. If you're planning a trip after that - call for ice conditions and you can use our drop box for the access fees. Thanks!

There has been some activity on Perch Bar and the Rock Pile. Seems like groups have been pulling a few out of this area, jigging and right on the bottom. Yesterday a new pressure ridge popped up about 1/4 mile off our road, 3-4 ft high in the Perch Bar area. This is the first ridge of the entire season. With the warm temps, we may be seeing more of them popping.

Oh Oh things are a changing. Is your main road OK and can still get out to Zoomers or Big island. Bruce and I will be up we think. We may stay south by his place. We have options.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
