Island Lake

8 posts in this topic

Has everyone heard about Island freezing out because the DNR did not turn on the areators?

Are you kidding me?? Why would they not turn them on?

Island Lake is in Lyon County and does not have an aeration system. Are you referring to Split Rock Lake near the town of Ihlen?

No I was talking about Island. I did not think that there was areator's on the lake. I was told this the otherday that the Marshall and Pipestone paper both had a article on the lake a couple of weeks ago. If anyone in that area could confirm this that would save me a trip to go after some perch.

the best I can tell you is I saw a 9# northern caught out there last Friday. He did tell me that the water had a smell. Yes there is no aerator on that lake.

This lake has had a smell the last 3 or 4 years. Last year it was very murky and smelly and there was talk of a winter kill then. For everyone that was out there this year, you know that is not true with the amount of fish and pressure that was on it this year. Just wondering what next year will bring.

Getting back to fishing, has anyone been out to Island lately? I've never been out there myself but know a lot of people that got into the perch out there earlier...hopefully if there is a oxygen problem, the warm temps will help.

What does the Lake map chip run for it?

Great tip Big A.  Was in exact scenario and picked one up myself.  Right after ordered the universal Lowr. pack from cabelas.  Had a 597 on old boat that sold, loved the unit for ice, excited to see how Lowrance is this time around.  Will sit next to the Garmin in boat for GPS, not a big fan of the Lakevu

There are certainly areas on the West end of Vermilion that walleyes can spawn at. Quite a few years ago walleyes were tagged at the Pike River Hatchery and some of them were caught on the West end a couple of weeks later! So walleyes will certainly travel full length of Vermilion to spawn also! Cliff

Walleyes are known to travel very long distances to spawn.  Lots of tracking studies done on other bodies of water show annual spawning movements of 50 miles or more commonly being made.  That puts the entire lake well within range for any given walleye that wants to make a long spawning run.   My question is this...are there spawning grounds on the West end of the lake?  Or, are most of the walleyes - includng those found most of the year on the West end - traveling to the East end and running up into Pike Bay to spawn?  Has anyone caught West end walleyes dripping in eggs or milt early in the season?   Brian

I can not think of any lake in the Ely area that would have 5" of ice. Even the beaver ponds in the Tower area barely have ice on them! Cliff
