I wish since I go to school there, but I dont know Michigan is looking pretty good this year.

I hear you on the Wolverines, but if there's one team I dislike more than the pretty boys from Mlps/St.Paul, it's Red and his boys.

Its possible but its gonna be tough. If they can come together and play good hockey, they'll win. Its going to be exciting if they get to the Frozen Four again.

We'll see how Michigan does in the national tournament. They haven't exactly played a long list of top teams like the Sioux have. Check out their schedule on USCHO and you'll see what I mean. I would say that the quality of competition in the WCHA will give those schools a little head start come tournament time.

Thats easy...... H.E double hockey sticks NO!.. grin.gif

With the overall parity in college sports spilling over to Hockey as well I'd say it's a roll of the dice like last year.

Lets not kid ourselves although the WCHA is still the best overall conference in the nation it's still just a shell of its former dominating self and doesn't have the great teams at the top like in years past.

I know the die-hard WCHA fans that still have their blinders on like over at USCO, RUBEChat, and other forums are using the standard talking point excuse that the WCHA is so deep now which of course I don't buy into at all.

Michigan just lost their 2nd best player "kolarik" which will really hurt them if he can't come back plus they are very young team also. I don't consider playing the Defending National Champions 5 times exactly a weak schedule, the rest of the country's Hockey top to bottom has made up considerable ground on the WCHA. We are NOT a shoe-in to have teams playing and winning the National title year in and year out anymore.

Flame away boys!

It may be possible but I doubt it. Somebody will get arrested or suspended from the team.

yeah maybe kyle radke, sioux dont need him!

they're saying kolarik isn't supposed to miss that much time. he is a major part of the scheme for reds team though. i would agree with peirbridge that a lot of ground has been made up to catch up with the wcha, should make for an interesting national tourney. besides playing defending national champs 5 times you can add miami(who does have a weak schedule), ND, gophs, badgers, as well as BU & BC. weak schedule? come on man.

MAIZE & BLUE!!

Michigan has the 14th most difficult schedule and Miami has the 32nd hardest. Take the for what it is worth but the top nine on the strength of schedules on the list are all WCHA teams. The WCHA has a 28-15-8 record against all conferences or a .627 win percentage the closest conference to that is the CCHA at 29-25-5 or .534 win percentage. This should provide a fine opportunity for the WCHA to win yet another title. Currently there is a possibility for 7 WCHA teams to make the national tourney and if it wasn't for the automatic bids to the AHA and CHA the WCHA could have 8 (the 8th team in Minnesota). The next closest league is the CCHA with the possibility of 4 teams. From the looks of the current numbers the WCHA certainly is the strongest league in college hockey.

Research man do some before you rag on the WCHA.

It just shows how bad it is when teams like Duluth, Mankato ST, Wisconsin, St.cloud and yes even the Gophers are even being considered for the NCAA tourney!

The .627 is the worst winning percentage the WCHA has had against the rest of the country since they started keeping statistics......try to keep up YAK!

Its your choice to keep your Northdakota/wcha blinders on but....

Carry on! grin.gif

What does that have to do with our main point that the WCHA is not nearly as dominant as in years past and one of reasons why as good as North Dakota is it's still going to be tough to win it all with the obvious parity we have in College Hockey ?

On a side note the 8th best team in CCHA completed a season sweep last night against the so called 7th best team in the COUNTRY Mankato State Mavericks last night 4-2 at Mankato.

I'm confused bridge, do we quote the past do we not quote the past??? According to your previous posts you don't care about the past. Well, at least not anything older than the last nine years. I'm just using your rules and talking about this year. Oh by the way, can give me the WCHA's out of conference winning percentage for the last ten years? Or are you talking out of the wrong end again?

Just because the Chokers suck this year doesn't mean the league sucks too. Pierbridge you definitely need a hug. Maybe there is a support group or a twelve step plan you can get involved with. I'm sure there are other concerned Choker fans that will lend you a shoulder to cry on.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but this forum is about the Fighting Sioux not how bad the Gophers are this year.

Highjack?.....I didn't high-jack anything I responded to posters in this thread that have more to say then "The golden chokers suck this year" "I would much rather hang out with some rural Canadian guys than a bunch of spoiled city boys." with my reasoning why I didn't think North Dakota would win it this year nothing off topic on anything I wrote at all.

yakfisher, if we want to start calling people out, why don't you get off your nodak finger givin soapbox and come to realize that nobody is saying the sux don't have a tight squad this year. the points brought up are simply saying it's not going to be a cake walk for ANY wcha team to take it down this year.

so, maybe, in fact probably, there is a support group for "poor und fans who are always getting picked on." come on, man.

tj, i know it's okay to be a homer, i'm from kato, but come on. mavs winning it all? it'd be a huge step for the program to make and win one in the national tourney, if they can hold on and not peter out against an ugly tech squad to end the season.

So, you're saying that you would rather hang out with Sioux Hockey players than Gopher players??? That is the first thing that you have ever written that makes any sense at all.

So you think the Sioux have no chance because the Chokers suck and that makes all of the WCHA weak. You refuse to support anything you write with actual facts. How much worse is the WCHA's record this year over years past? You made the statement support it.

I think the Sioux have as good an opportunity to win this year as they have in any of the last 6 years, it is up to them to take it if they want it. Could Michigan beat them? Yes they could but I think it is more likely that Michigan is going to lose to a WCHA team once again in the tournament. I just hope the Sioux lose a game or two over the next few weeks to put that bad taste back in their mouths and keep them from becoming over confident.

Those were quotes from you and varmit at least you have some hockey knowledge and you are not all insults and derogatory like Varmit.

Do you read any of these post I try to highlight things to make it easier for you to understand?

Ahhh... keeping it simple. My kind of language. Here's how I'm doing it again this year. When the Fighting Sioux are winning, the flag keeps flying in my yard. It's on an extended run right now. With a little luck, I may need to replace it for next season. Now give me a cocktail or two and I get the hankering to add some complexity. As I look at it right now, it's fluttering pretty good. It must be windy. That's as complex as it needs to be. Much rather be be wailing on a #2 rodent team or better yet knocking them out of #1 than dealing with this M = Mediocre.

No confusion or offense taken. Here's to keeping it simple...the Sioux are good this year and the gophers are not.

That sure is a black/white take on 2 teams that have played 4 times this year with one team(the supposed "good" one)holding a one game lead in head2head record as well as a slim 2 total goal edge. I would expect to hear a comment like that from either a drunk 19 year old student attending his first hockey game ever and thinking that way just because it's his university or...a 7 year old! Not a comment I would expect from anyone that knows anything about hockey or any sport for that matter! Then again, the comment seems quite appropriate considering most of the thoughts shared on this forum!!

If anything at all, the only point your comment clearly highlights is that the siouxage must not be very good if the games they play against a "bad" team are so competitive??

So are the susies "bad" as well or just underachievers?

Hey Bryce, you must have really had the "hankering to add some complexity" last night huh...sheesh, hopefully for your computers sake you didn't spill!

Varmintpuke, I attempted to keep this elementary for ya, let me know if I can dilute, sorry "water it down", anymore!

USA!

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?
    • SkunkedAgain
I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
    • Brianf.
Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
