Went fishing out of Hillman's and had 2 sleepers rented from Kelly from Wed afternoon to Sat morning. 5 guys in the 2 shacks on Wed and three more came up Thursday afternoon. Weather was cold but not too bad and the fishing was ok. We caught 8 keeper eyes and 3 crappies before the 3 guys showed up on Thursday. They got up just in time for the fish fry. We all got full on the fish, spuds and beans. Nothing like fresh fish. \:\)

Things got a little cloudy after that \:\/ ( alcohol and the fact that the houses were a little over a half mile apart) so I can't really give you an exact count on the number of walleyes that we caught the rest of the time but I will tell you that we did alright and we did release some that were over the slot and some that were too small to keep. I think the majority of us managed to go home with a limit of eyes. We did end up with 10 crappies the largest barely beating out a couple of others at 15 1/2 inches. We also caught some perch and 3 northerns with the largest northern being at 40 inches and as fat as can be! I was the one that managed to catch that hog and it was pure luck since I had 4 or 6 lb line on, it was hooked in the corner of the mouth away from the line cutting teeth and it tangled up every other line in the house. That gave me quite a rush. cool.gif

All said and done we drank more then we should have, ate like kings and managed to catch some fish.

Thanks to Kelly and Jon for putting up with us. Nobody in our group had any complaints about the accommodations. Very sorry to hear about your friends dog.

Slabfesters sorry I didn't make it but I couldn't convince any of my friends to stay. Sounds like you had a lot of fun even without me. \:D

I know one thing; that shack always smelled good. You guys do eat well when you go fishing.

Considering how old a laker has to be before reaching reproductive maturity, a slot may help.  The only thing I'd worry about there is having to put a bleeder back down the hole because it wasn't legal.  Then if a person wanted to keep their limit, that would just mean a wasted fish should they be able to get two more.   When I first started laker fishing, catching and keeping "my two" was a given if I were to have that good of a day.  Then it changed to releasing pretty much everything over the mid - 20 inch range unless it bled.  Now 1 fish in the 24 inch range would be my perfect weekend limit if I could choose.   When a person gets introduced to these addictive ghosts, it's tough to put em back.  There's a lot of excitement and pride in earning such a prized fish.  And I really enjoy eating them.  But in the case of Burntside, I would support a 1 fish limit, no slot.

I decided to go watch them pull it out.   Never seen that before.   While they are working on pulling it out, another car is driving at them down the riverbed.   The officer has to run over and shoe them away.   The DNR might need to close that to traffic since there are a lot of dumb people.   Don

Great article; very educational.  Thanks for sharing.  I would be interested to know if having a slot limit on lake trout would help populations like it has with walleyes.  If so, why hasn't the DNR implemented it yet?

Mr. B, Welcome to FM! June is almost always a good tome to fish for bass on the shorelines! Plenty of good bass country on the whole lake too! I do not fish for bass much but there are plenty of people on this site that do so you should get some good info.! Cliff
