Went fishing out of Hillman's and had 2 sleepers rented from Kelly from Wed afternoon to Sat morning. 5 guys in the 2 shacks on Wed and three more came up Thursday afternoon. Weather was cold but not too bad and the fishing was ok. We caught 8 keeper eyes and 3 crappies before the 3 guys showed up on Thursday. They got up just in time for the fish fry. We all got full on the fish, spuds and beans. Nothing like fresh fish. \:\)

Things got a little cloudy after that \:\/ ( alcohol and the fact that the houses were a little over a half mile apart) so I can't really give you an exact count on the number of walleyes that we caught the rest of the time but I will tell you that we did alright and we did release some that were over the slot and some that were too small to keep. I think the majority of us managed to go home with a limit of eyes. We did end up with 10 crappies the largest barely beating out a couple of others at 15 1/2 inches. We also caught some perch and 3 northerns with the largest northern being at 40 inches and as fat as can be! I was the one that managed to catch that hog and it was pure luck since I had 4 or 6 lb line on, it was hooked in the corner of the mouth away from the line cutting teeth and it tangled up every other line in the house. That gave me quite a rush. cool.gif

All said and done we drank more then we should have, ate like kings and managed to catch some fish.

Thanks to Kelly and Jon for putting up with us. Nobody in our group had any complaints about the accommodations. Very sorry to hear about your friends dog.

Slabfesters sorry I didn't make it but I couldn't convince any of my friends to stay. Sounds like you had a lot of fun even without me. \:D

I know one thing; that shack always smelled good. You guys do eat well when you go fishing.

There's still driveable ice in the Ely area.

We were fishing tip-ups for pike and jigging spoons for perch over by Terry's the last few weeks. There were quite a few perch in the 3-10" range. Sometimes we had ten marks on our screens at once. They were in shallow, 6-8', and the big pike were chasing them.   Also, Rocky Reef had some pockets where the perch were thick this winter. Those tended to be in 11-16'.    I still think the perch are in there, but they're difficult to find under the ice.   Get the boat out there and idle around side-scanning for baitfish pods, kand you'll see a lot of what look like perch schools.

White Sand had 12 inches last Monday when I fished it.  ice cracked and began shifting a few days ago.  Interesting year as ice is still tight to shoreline, but some of those cracks that developed a few days ago are up anywhere from a foot to 5 feet wide now.      I'm done. was hoping to hit N.Long one last time but not worth the risk anymore.

46 inch pike in MN sort of a stretch as well, although I was "only" about 5 inches short on one last summer. (on vermilion)
