Thats the thing about a river, one will never know thickness. With NSP dumping hot water into the river you will go from 23 inches down to 2 inches in a matter of feet. About a month ago I was sitting out on the river fishing on a solid 14 inches of ice. The ice was a clear sheet and the day I was fishing was the same day all the ice sail boats were zipping around. Well one of those guys assumed the ice was safe everywhere and found him self in a world of trouble real quick. From where I was sitting I could see the top of his sail and him crawling out of the water. I called dispatch and directed the rescue to his location. Luckily for him he lived but he learned a valuable lesson about river ice.

I crossed over to the dark side of smallies about 15 years ago. Mostly chase pannies in winter but used to chase eyes a few times on the hard water each season.   I could post a ton of pics if you need more proof.

Sorry to make you hold up a bottom feeder, but we needed to see it!

I was up over the weekend and my shoreline was getting pretty sketchy.  Had a pocket of open water down the shore about a 100 yards. Where I could see the bottom in two to three feet of water.  Walked out about a hundred yards and popped four holes Saturday afternoon. There was 17- 18.5"s of ice in those four holes. Looking at the forecast I can't see the ice sticking around too much longer.  The holes I popped had 5-6" of pretty mushy cloudy stuff on top and about 12"s of pretty solid stuff underneath it.
