Sag Lake 2-8-08 (photos included)

Beautiful sunny day on Big Saganaga. Most fish hit tip ups where as a few days earlier not a single flag flew on the same spot. Heres a few of the bigger ones we caught. Actually got a nice walleye also.

stf, got the fish on a mixture of live shiners and suckers. Didn't even try dead bait. The biggest one hit a sucker on a tip-up that I was pulling in to move to a new location. I was holding the tip-up in one hand and spinning the spool with my other when the line wouldn't come up anymore. Took me a couple of seconds to realize what was going on. My first thought was the hook got caught on the bottom of the ice, but when I looked down to see my floro leader nowhere in site, I knew what it was.

All in all an awesome day. Good weather, good company, and lakers. What more could a guy ask for.

Ever venture up this way stf?

Actually i'm the only one in our little posse that has a sled. So its usually a shuttle system, which I don't mind. The spot we have been fishing is about a 3 mile machine ride and about a half of a mile walk, so not bad at all. I am going to do some more looking around also. I have some similar locations picked out on the map with similar sled rides/walks.

Steve, to add a bit to Tulibee's answer, the Corridor is roughly 5 - 6 miles long from the landing up to the Canadian Border, with many many locations all along the corridor to fish. Tulibee, were you just in for a day trip, or were you there for saturday too? We stayed at VCO for the weekend and fished friday afternoon and saturday until about 2... I suspect we passed your group as we fished a bit further up the trail. Fishing was definitely good before that front moved in on saturday. Cant wait to get back up there this weekend!

Nice work! What's the ice and snow conditions like in that neck of the woods. I'll be up in the area in four weeks, I'd like to get a feel for what it might be like then. I know it's a long ways off and there can be plenty of changes. Ice thickness? Lake travel conditions? In the woods snow depth?

Thanks

Lake travel conditions were great, very little snow and no pressure ridges. Ice was roughly 16 inches where we fished, but that varies widely depending on the lakes depth, water clarity, etc. Not sure how the snow conditions on smaller lakes are but the bigger lakes are pretty good right now.

Tulibee, yeah that dang front blew us right off the lake. Wow, what a wind!

So I just wanted to make sure I understand this. You can run a sled up the corridor, but not off it. To travel off you have to walk.

But you can run a 25 horse motor around most of the lake in the summer right.?

Can a guy run a power auger up on Sag?

You got it, sled on the corridor only. Until you cross into Canada, then you can go anywhere up to the boundary of the Quetico. No motorized augers allowed on the US side though. Smart huh? You can run a snowmobile or a 25 hp outboard but not a power auger or a chainsaw... My recommendation, fish the canadian side after their season is open this weekend. Sled right to your spot and you can use the power auger.

Tulibee or anyone else with lake sag knowledge,

I am new to the lake and coming up to the area to do some winter camping. Wondering if you have any suggestions for lake trout for the area north of Romance lake on the south central part of lake sag.

Any help would be appreciated

thanks

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
