Diamond closing??

Recommended Posts

I heard thru the grapevine the dnr is considering closing the crappie fishing on diamond due to the large amounts of fish harvested over the past few months. I was wondering if anyone else heard anything on this or is it just bait shop talk?

WHEEY Too late I'm worried about the spring crappie bite now,Man everyone was takin limits everyday, well not everyone but bout everybody I spoke with.

I never recall the DNR closing any lake for over fishin cept the big Intensely managed lakes. Crappie come back quick but Its dissapionting seeing that many leave the lake.Just too many people out there I last counted 122 houses where bite was.The area I counted them was bout 50 yds. wide x 200 yds long! they were on top of each other.

They should have reduce the limit to 5 in December like they do with the big lakes. I know there has been a lot of fish caught there, but not all those houses have caught their limits, and if they have the DNR should go check freezers and start giving out tickets to over limits. Maybe people will think next time they have a freezer full, and do a little catch and release.

Just saw a friend who lives on the main lake,He said they went out when there were sooo many shacks on the ice, and cruised on snowmachine to count houses, cause he'd never in 30 yrs saw that many he counted over 625 WOW theres only 330 property owners.I guess the fish really took a beating.

I'm afraid by the lack of smaller class fish,5-9 inchers in there. Most I've seen are the 10 -12 inchers about 3-4 different classes of fish. Can kiss spring bite good bye. there seems to be not as many walleyes caught this year, what is everyones feelings on that?

Last opener the eyes were hittin like crazy,But they were only 10-13 inch fish, every late afternoon the boats were lineing up on the same spot 30-40 boats at times,in the same spot as all the shacks on the ice now,3-5 people per boat. They were havin fun but I wonder what they were takin. The sunfish bite got out too and they also were hammered! I had never seen so many boats as last spring, early summer, and now the ice shacks,I am wondering how I'll do this year,

we where at a cabin on the lake for a week last july, hot and windy and we got some walleyes even in that heat. Also got huge sunnies on lighted bobbers around midnight of the full moon boy they would fight good.

The power of the internet. If you get on fish and don't want the spot to get exploited....don't tell anyone. To quote the Hells Angels "Three can keep a secret if two are dead".

How did the 600 houses get there? When there are 600 houses on one lake the size of diamond, the secret is out.

right on Esox

If you get on a hot bite and guys are fishing without houses, try C&R on all fish caught....guys will at first look at you like you're crazy, then ask why you aren't keeping them...some will even ask if they can have your fish.

Nothing like bounty to transform sportsmen into game hogs.

With a general attitude like yours, so is everyone else! Not everyone who has fished this lake has been doing that, so get off your high horse! I've read alot of your comments lately and they seem to be nothing sort of negative, every single one of them!

mr. crappie,

this runs deeper than just words, it has to do with things like the emancipation

proclamation, succession from the union, the killing of a president; and its been

going on for over 150 years.

Uh okay, I was only wondering what happened, but I guess its really none of my business anyway. Good luck fishing!!!

Welcome to minnesota, home of 10,000 lakes and 10 million ice fishermen. Thats the way it is anywhere you go..

...Speaking of negative. I have never seen a positive comment by Dckasten either. I believe its in the forum rules that all posts must remain positive. Everyone, rethink why you are here!!!

I have no idea why youd see that as a negative comment. Just because i dont come up with the same solution to a problem as you do doesnt mean my anwser was a negative one. Correct me if im wrong but thats the same as telling me im an idiot because i dont have the same opinion as you? If there are 600+ people fishing on a lake and the fish numbers go down why dont you tell me what your explanation would be, aliens? Refering the the forum policy, why wouldnt the comment you posted be considered "negative"? I never said anything bad about anybody, thats just how i feel. Lakes can only handle so much pressure, its the same as deer hunting. Hunt one piece of land and shoot a deer everytime you go out and well, Sooner or later you wont be seeing deer in that spot.

Just because its your opinion still doesn't mean its not negative. I find it hard to believe that we are all wrong about your comment being negative and you are right. So whats your excuse?

My excuse is that i can almost guerantee i fish more lakes and see more country in a week then you do all season. I honestly feel like i have seen enough lakes with 500 people out there fishing this season to say its not different anywhere you fish. why do you think my comment is negative? Go on any other post and people will tell you the same thing, "the fish are to small, the numbers are to low, there are to many people fishing" its all stuff i have read from MANY people on this board.

You cant sit there and tell somebody that ice fishes everyday of the week what numbers will do to a lake. I have seen it personally, Mr. Noitall. Or apparently you prefer Mr.CrappieKing, the kinda guy that has 3000 dollars worth of equipment and fishes 3 times a year

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
