You know, you can do a bit of scouting just through a little observation. Go out there and see where people are - if they are moving - if they smell fishy - are they quiet or visiting, etc. You can find out a lot on a lake just by observation - plus it's fun to just scout. Jump in the truck - bring some binocs - a great attitiude, and a 12 pack of pop to share with guys you are pumping info from - and you should be good to go.

Plus, there is nothing wrong with stopping and visiting with people. You don't have to ask them to put you on fish, but you can get general ideas for what is going on, especially if you are polite.

I see these posts all the time, looking for place, depth, location and bait. I hope this points you in a good direction.

So, what was YOUR ice show score of the day!? I'm heading down on Sunday to see what scraps I can dig up. Absolutely more excited than I should be considering the only ice I've seen so far is the kind that fits in a glass..

Seeing it's only your second year find buddy to go with as rock said. I even bring a second set of dry clothes and footwear. I am to big mess with thin ice I need 6 inches as rick said early varies so much so some where there is half as much ice.    Safety gear check include ice cleats as i have seen enough broken arms happen. Check your gear test the vexilar hook it up and turn it on to see if it runs or just hook up the charger. I use the drill plate so I charge all my batteries and with blade protecter on I make sure it works. My little sled is ready to haul my gear.    I go light during early ice so fill so fill up my plactics container and restock my jig boxes. Make sure my set ups have new line and pick my favorite set ups to take with. I can add some photos later
