My contract is up with Sprint, I've not been real happy with their coverage as of late. maybe its the phone? regardless, Im willin to make a move, if.....? I see verizon has a huge area of coverage compared to sprint. did they acquire unicell? I used to have them (cell 2000/unicel)but hated the issues going to and fro from Fargo/Dl. is that still an issue?

Most of my travels take me within a 200mi radius from DL. what works for you??

Thanks

I have Unicell and it works fine between DL and Fargo, really well in Northern Minnesota. Only thing is that my plan roams once I hit St. Cloud and into the cities but I'm sure they have a plan that doesn't. I'm happy with them and the coverage they provide. On a more important note, how's the fishing? Big C putting out any fish for you? Give me a call some time, I got a couple questions I'd like to ask you.

I have Verizon and have only found one spot that I have issues and thats on Hwy 4 between Perham and Vergas. Its not horrible but it cuts out a little bit here and there. I have not had any major issues in my drives from Pelican Rapids to Wadena, Wadena to DL, and DL to Fargo. I have always had service.I am usually always in Extended Area but that doesn't cost anything extra. So far, I have yet to find a place I don't have service. They are a little bit more expensive but so far, I have been very happy with them.

I have Verizon as well and you're right, they do have a bigger area. Their area follows all major roadways through out the state and roughly 10 miles to either side of that roadway. For instance, my folks live on the south end of Big Toad Lake, putting them about 3 miles or so off of highway 34 and it is no problem getting service at their house. I have to say that I have been very please with them, haven't dropped a call in years and have never had to pay roaming fees, even when we were in Florida.

Verizon has worked great for us.

From Lake of the Woods to the middle of nowhere North Dakota.

I have Unicel and have been very happy with their coverage. I have found VERY few dead spots. Lakes area coverage is AWESOME.

Should work very well for you.

I play golf at the ACS tourney most years and the Unicel big wigs were there and they sold me. They were right as well.

Just don't get Cell One or whatever it is called now. Not good.

Unicel has a digital receiver that they put in a couple of years ago. It also piggy-backs on Verizon a lot.

Good stuff.

People are talking about Verizon. It is good, but a buddy has Verizon and when we look at our phone next to eachother I almost always have a better signal.

Plus Plus Unicel meshes the towers together with Verizon. Or something like that.

I am almost positive that Cell One IS Unicel now: Wife has sprint and it has not been good: I had a verizon phone that got reception everywhere I went, even off road and back into my bear baits. We will are looking to switch, and will most likely go with Verizon from the things I've seen and heard about them.

I had cell one for years, they were bought out by alltel...thats who i have now. My phone works great in the lakes area, I live in Averill (north of Glyndon). Averill is the only place my phone cuts out, you know, at my house of course! Other than that no complaints. I've had it since 1995.

Alltell...BAD anything else good,

I have had so many dropped calls, and thier service and thier insurance policies suck. i would for sure go with something or someone else, i hate dealing with all tell, it seeems like your talking to a wall.

Cell One in our area went to Unicel...I was with midwest wireless ...they were bought out by alltel & have had nothing but trouble, just like jiggin said, lots of dropped calls & if someone leaves voice mail or a text message, you might get it two days after it was sent.

I work for Alltel and Im not going to lie- I have found that the only competant Tech Support is in Mankato (toots my own horn) and Customer Service is worthless. Service with Midwest Wireless was great, but we used *big surprise* Verizon for our roaming towers. To be honest, I would personally recommend Verizon, they have amazing customer service and great coverage. T-mobile is hit or miss if youre off the beaten path and Sprint sucks unless youre on or right off a major road. If you do a lot of travelling Alltel isnt too bad, but there are a LOT of little things that need to be done to make sure your phone will work and if you forget or miss something youre without a phone. Hope at least some of this helps!!

Unicell bought Rural Cellular Corp., which had most of Northern Minnesota. Cell One and Unicell are definately seperate companies.

I always had good luck when I was midwest wireless, so when alltel bought them out I figured we'd be using all the towers we had PLUS the alltel towers & things would be better yet, but i was sure wrong. I wasnt sure how it all worked, but if we were using verizons towers at that time, I guess that kind of explains it.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯

I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
