Tyler, I grew up fishing the St. Croix chasing Cats. I caught a 60 pounder in the early nineties. It's the ones that broke the line that haunt my memory. My favorite was realing the decoy suckers and have a giant musky or pike in hale the whole rig-two foot leader, sinker, and all-then swim away with just a quick snip of my 17 pound test. Hans.

not much of a guy for trophies more for the experience( or maybe that is what a guy says that hasn't caught many)But very rarely do i put tape or weight to a fish unless it is tourney time. I will guess low though.

4lb walleye - people actually fish for those - they get in the way of good fish like eelpout

some big flatties don't even know how big not state record but big -(lake m)

8 lb channel (river x)

5ish largies (lake r,s,v,p)

4ish smallies (river x,l,lake z)

18inch brown (river x)

40+ ski (river x)

20+ steelhead (river c)

Some gymungus carp and sheepies

That is my trophy list. Don't steal my spots!!!!!

Those two really are impressive, the crappie for shear size, and the sturgeon for the line you caught it on. Congrats!!

I was actually fishing smallies below the dam in I. Falls with a medium action rod when the sturgeon hit. It felt more like trying to raise a tree branch off the bottom until it started swimming slowly up stream. It surfaced and I would have been happy to just cut the line but my brother made the mistake of assessing the line and rod and concluded out loud that I'd never land it. 70 minutes later, with some sweet boat maneuvering by my bro and we guided it into a shallow area 400 yds downstream where a friend of mine got out, bent over and bear hugged it into the boat because we had no net! I wondered if it might be a line class record - not even close. The record at the time was something like a 67 lb. lake sturgeon caught on 6 lb. mono. This one around 32 lbs.

The crappie fishing was actually the same trip, but on the lake earlier the same week. 3 of us got into a ginormis school of mega crappies and c&r 140 in 2 days and I honestly don't remember any under 13". Unfortunately we haven't had a repeat of that after commercial netting was allowed in the area.

5lb smallmouth(river x)

5lb 13oz largemouth (many around this size in ottertail county)

12lb northern (Maplewood State Park)

9lb walleye (Red River wahpeton)

21lb Channel Cat (Red river wahpeton)

19.5lb Carp (red river wahpeton)

2lb 2oz Rock bass that I caught probably 12-15 years ago that would have been a state record but my dad said that it wasn't

15.5" Crappie

Nothing that huge, but all fun. All were C&R except the crappie

The catfish was at Kidder Dam in Wahpeton. It was right in the evening in the middle of the summer and there were many people walking and riding by. I hooked it on only 10lb test. Fought it for 15 minutes and had a crowd of 10-15 people that stopped to cheer me on until I eventually landed it. Great time.

Uffda,

Always good to hear that story. Hasn't changed since you first told me, so there must be some truth to it eh?lol Hope your well?

Curious about "tip-ups" reported 6 and 3/4 pound Root River smallie. Did you get a tape on that fish? VERY impressive if true.

I hope everyone here has at least a brief moment either before making their first cast or while reeling in that tropy, what they plan to do with it.

Keep the rods bendin!!!

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .
    • SkunkedAgain
Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!
