Any reports/tips for this lake? I know the lake, and I've heard there's a good crappie bite this season? Thanks guys.

According to the DNR the walleye reports are bogus. The 2005 survey found 1 sauger. I've been fishing the lake for years and never heard of anyone catching any eyes or sauger. They say the sauger was probably illegally stocked.

Maybe the Walleyes migrated via storm sewer system connected from other lakes?

I've been told the lake connects with Sunset Pond. Which is why people were finding tigers in Sunset. Not sure where else it would connect to.

Let me know if you have any luck with the waxies and crappie minnows. The last few years I've fished that area with waxies and small crappie minnows all that ever turned up was mini sunnies and perch. Aka fish suckers.

Keller and Lac Lavon are right across the street from Crystal and I heard long ago they were connected by drainage. There isn't a walleye population in either of those lakes, so they didn't come from there.

Well this is one thing I will have to check out this Saturday. If you see a silver FX4 with Trap Yukon near by come out and say hi. Will post the results Saturday evening.

No eyes but we got some decent perch. I'll be out there looking for crappies one evening this week so maybe we'll find some eyes at night with the crappies.

Good luck on finding walleyes on this lake. I know that there are a few and I do mean a few but I have never caught them. However there are all the 5-7 inch crappies a guy could ask for. Good luck

I'm planning on fishing Lake Crystal tonight after work. Are there any bait shops nearby Crystal so I can stock up on waxies and crappie minnows? I will be coming from Hastings.

Crystal will be a great lake in a few years when all the midget crappies grow up. I caught 12 in 15 minutes. Then moved and caught another 20+ in an hour and half.

In a few years it will have some nice perch and crappies. But for now its the place for tons of small crappies.

I went to Crystal last night and caught 2, 9" crappies, a lot of 4-5" crappies, and with a few potato chip gills thrown in for good measure. I think you are right that this lake could be great when all of those 4-5" crappies grow up a little. How long does it take a 5" crappie to become a 10" crappie, assuming an ample food supply?

I have fished Crystal since the 1970's. The fish size and quantity has not changed at all. Bluegills and crappies have always been over populated and stunted. 9" crappies are about as big as they get and there are not alot in that size range. I have never caught a keeper bluegill on Crystal. I have caught nice bass, northerns and a few upper 30 inch tiger muskies. It is a great lake for small kids as the potatoe chip sunnies are like piranahs.

i heard of someone catching a 52 inch tiger out of crystal this summer does anyone know if that is true or if there are even tigers that big in there?

If they did catch a 52" Tiger Muskie out there it is a new state record. Got this from the DNR.

Current State Record -

Tiger Muskie: 34 pounds, 12 ounces, 51 inches, Lake Elmo (Washington County), 07/07/1999.

I know there are some big Tigers in that lake. The DNR has stocked it heavily. When I worked at Gander Burnsville people would come in on occasion talking about catching big tigers on Crystal.

Enough stocking, with all the small sunnies, crappies and perch eventually people will catch some monster Tigers.

I know a few spots out there. I am just lacking the boat and muskie gear at present. But there are some really good spots out there. Check a good lake map, and I dont mean the map from the DNR website.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
