From what some buddies have told me the crappie bite is off and on depending on the amount of traffic and noise on that particular day. Maybe try to avoid the crowd and you'll have more luck than those who believe they're "on the spot".

Went out tue.and tried our luck.Found the ice to be 29in just south of the thin ice signs.The camera and vexilar both showed fish but nothing biting. Heard they were biting on Sunday during the contest.Havent seen much for any other postings on other lakes. Either their killing em and being quite or nothing is going on.

Went to Marion on 2-23-08 to try for crappies with my son. We only caught 2 fish for the whole day. My son caught a 1lb LM BASS and I caught the largest WALLEYE of my life, 28in.,8lbs. What a way to finish the season. Hope to post pictures later. The ice is 31in so it should be safe for awhile for late pan fishing.

I've heard it was a good year, particularly early on, for slob walleyes. The lake is plenty productive and there is a good chunk of the population in that large to trophy size range.

HDrider this lake also has nice sized cats! Better hold onto the rod or at very least keep your bail open,or its bye bye rod! They really slam it!!!! Very nice story you had!!

I caught one of those big cats last summer along the s.w.side trolling for walters.Was trolling a Mepps spinner on 4lb test with a ultra light.It was 30in&15lbs. Got pictures buried somewhere,will try to get them posted also. Went home and drank some beers that time also. To the big walter,I caught her on the North side. She had a big belly getting ready to spawn.I beleive in releaseing big fish like that,so to all,she still is in the lake. Good luck fishing to all this next season.

Thats sure fun!! I also release all large fish! It was wierd the first time i did it .But now i have done it always,It really feels good!! I hope there are more people out there like you!

I would guess there will be quite a few people out this weekend with the weather being nice. A would of caution, the north landing is trash, large ruts and it may be difficult to get a house up or down.

Went to ST James lake Sun and took the wife for the first time. Was a nice day until the wind kicked up. Managed to bring home 15 nice Sunnies for a fish fry. Went to the fish fry on Friday that the Knights of Columbus put on. They really do a good job.My brother used to belong to the Knights until he passed away last year. He always invited us up to Hutch for the feed and I really enjoy it. Good luck to all,Fishing is Better Than Working, Right!

I was one year old when my parents bought a house on Lake Marion. I had the great opportunity to grow up as a kid on the lake, and I have so many awesome memories of Lake Marion, swimming, fishing, skiing, ice skating, snowmobiling. I even remember when they drained the lake, killed all the fish and started over. Now me and my 10 year old son and 8 year old daughter are now creating awesome memories fishing and playing on the lake. Thanks for everybody practicing catch and release of the nice fish, I hope the crappies did not get cleaned out this past winter. This is a great little lake that the DNR invested in many years ago by draining the lake and starting over and stocking it, and many thanks to the Rod and Gun Club for the aeration system in the winter.

Let's continue to treat this lake with respect and I really hope that my great grandchildren will have the same great memories that I have of Lake Marion.

Interesting. Do you recall what year they drained the lake? How did they accomplish that?

I thought they rotenoned it back in the 1970's to kill the carp and bullheads? It's possible that they did a drawdown to ensure chemical lethality. Before my time at any rate...

There is a big hole in the middle that I saw this morning due to the aerator. Some wind and warm temps and it'll be on it's way much quicker than the covered lakes.

about 10yrs ago we used to fish cats out there, are they still in the lake and is there a fishable population.

There are some Big cats in there, caught a few last year, was not fishin for the either, but have many do so and hve great results!

I went by Marion on Saturday and the aerator "area" (open water) is clear across the lake and I would say it covers at least 1/3 to 1/2 of visible lake from hwy 15.

Anyone going to be out on Marion for opener? We were out there last year on opener and slammed the eyes, limited out pretty quick, and they were all nice sized 16 to 18 inches. Anyone have any idea about how the bite will be on opener this year? Or where you will fish the lake and what u will use? We mainly pulled lindys and leeches last year, and spinners later in the day, very productive, we found all the eyes stacked up in the same place we just kind of stumbled on.

      So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

      On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

      Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
