For info on local contests call Chalstroms, they usually get flyers and if they dont know try Scotty at Fishermans Corner. Highbanks Resort on Fish Lake would be my 3rd choice for info unless its on Fish Lake of course.

I will be stopping at the Northern Sportsman Contest and trying my luck on my way home from the Bash Sunday.

Steve, do you need a ticket, or did you already pick one up?

Nate I still need some. I usually buy 2 or 3. They do sell them that day there in a trailer too.

There is a contest being held out of High Banks Resort on Saturday the 26th. He has a flyer at the bar and I saw a flyer at Charlstroms bait. The contest is be put on by students from Denfeld High School and is a fundraiser for MDA.

There was talk of another contest on Fish lake for the same day that was to be out of Eagles nest put on by the local snowmobile club. From what I heard yesterday that contest had been canceled for what ever reason.

Hope that helps.

shiner,

You can save a ticket for me also. I'm not planning at this time to attend the event but the money helps support their operation if I'm correct.

My brother always attends that event so I may just have to stop by and say hi.

You got it Tom. If I remember correctly, you don't have to be present to win the cash drawings, so if you don't make it the organization still gets funds and you get a chance to win.

I went and didnt catch a thing. Didnt win a thing either. Bd110's Brother JR won the big fish prize with a 8 plus pound northern that he pulled out of Rice lake yesterday. ;\)

Just joking JR. Nice fish and good job man. Biggest fish I ever saw caught in that contest for sure.

I will say I wasnt thrilled about letting vehicles on the ice this year. Its much quieter and less crowded with out all the trucks and cars out there.

If they continue to let vehicles out they need to extend the boundries to 3 times the size. You will also see more fish caught I would think.

N-Lander your're absolutely right I don't konw how anybody caught anything. That 8lber didn't stand a chance, he probably was caught by the tail fin. ;-) I do think driving out is convenient. Its a big lake and at first glance expanding the territory would be a good thing with as many people that were there.

Nice, I'll have to start fishing it more and learn it.

You can find crappies and sunfish anywhere on the like around the pencil reeds and/or cabbage.  One of the best spots is right in front of the resort, but don't limit yourself there as there are plenty of spots all over the lake for pan fish.  The nice part is that you will probably also catch bass while going for pan fish.  Good luck and remember to give other fisherman plenty of room.  No reason to fish close to others.

The quality of walleye on fish has really amped up since the slot. I would put it up there with the St. Louis River now as far as local waters that produce quality walleye. Sometimes it's hard to catch an eye under 17"...its kinda the opposite of Island Lake. I wish the protected slot was a little longer as I don't see many over 26".

I never got a chance to get down to Superior in the morning to fish from shore, as it was always a little too rough every day. I did get up early enough to make it to the devil track river, finally for the first time. Was nice to check it out, although my time was short. Caught 1 little rainbow, and lost 6!    Also checked out the Poplar River for the first time, off the caribou trail, at the campgrounds. Only fished it for a little bit, but caught 2 brook trout, one of which was about 12 inches. River was surprisingly deep, was wading in waste deep water.    My dad and my son are still up there. But they haven't really been able to fish due to the rain on Saturday and Sunday. If it was nice today, they were going to go back to Greenwood Lake. Otherwise, if the weather was bad, they were coming home a day early. Haven't heard from them yet, so hopefully they were able to get out.

Yes just north of Cook.  They are open 7 days 8:00-4:30. Y-store is open 5am - midnight.

Wind was howling when we left the dock this morning and I was pretty shook up about it. A nice steady bite with decent fish made the day a real pleasure.   Good news going into the big weekend, the fish are biting.

Is it the LaCroix Ranger Station where you pick up the permits now?
