Fished it a couple times earlier this year, didn't catch much. I have spent most of my time this winter out on Bald Oagle.

Phalen Lake is one of the closest lake to where I live and I fish it agressively during both hard and soft water seasons. For anybody interested in fishing Phalen Lake - I will tell you that it's not easy in my opinion. I have fished this lake for approximately 8 years or more. I have basically drilled numerous holes throughout the entire lake and dropped my underwater camera down into the lake in order to see what the lake looks like at the bottom and it varies from plain, muddy bottoms to gravels, rocks, and boulders to all vegetation and so forth - kind of like most lakes, but I can tell you all for sure - there's nothing in 60 - 90 feet area of the lake because it's so dark the underwater camera even with it's lights on can not fully display what is laying out there in the horizon. Anyways...if you want Walleyes and Perches - I would recommend fishing in 20 to 30 feet of water approximately 50 yards out from the beach shore by the southern part of the lake otherwise staying mobile is the key. I have never caught more then one crappie during the winter season on Phalen - maybe it's my bad luck, but I have caught some decent walleyes (Keepers) and numerous perches 5-8 inches.

Thanks for all the replies, we just ended up driving home (Duluth). Sorry I wasn't very specific on dates - we went up yesterday. Tried calling Pike Bay to no avail.    Hit the edge of a small reef and fished the rocks, transition, and sand. Two very small walleye were all we connected with.   Would have been nice to stay for the night bite, but got up early and did some trout fishing in the Duluth area this morning.   Tight lines.

Smoked 8  up this weekend and really better than I thought they would be.  fillet fish leave skin on for brine 1/2 cup noniodine salt 1 cup sugar 1 qt water brine overnight rinse, pat dry and let sit out for an hour or so.  sprinkle with a seasoning if you like. I did lemon pepper on a couple and seafood magic on a couple.  have smoker heated to 200 put in smoked with a little cherry wood smoke 1 hour and done.  should be about 155 degrees internal.  nom nom nom ! ! !

I have a BIL that lives south of there a bit. He says carnelian has lots of springs in it and wouldn't drive out there for no amount of money.

Out on the north end. 8", 15" and a 24" over night. I've lost about 8 so far off rattles. Not sure if I'm not getting a good hookset or what. I've tried horsing them in and babying... headshakes are dislodging the hooks.   any advise? I'd have 12 on the board had I not missed any!
