I filled up the auger the other day and I noticed the O-ring is cracked on my gas cap. It’s not leaking yet but it’s just a matter of time. Is there a place around Duluth that you can buy just the O-Ring? Or do I have to buy a new cap assy?

Capt., just go into any hardware store. They've got a big assembly of O-rings.

I ended up buying a very small soft plastic bathroom faucet washer. Black plastic that's harder than your O-ring but soft enough that it'll still seal well. Cost? Fifteen cents.

Steve,

Just make sure the o ring you got is compatible with gas.

If it isn't, it should let you know within a few days.

Lay the auger on it's side in such a way that the cap has gas in it.

Field testing, so to speak.

I just tried backing out the screw on the gas cap. Its going to take some force with a pliers to get that thing off.

Save the hassle and go get a new cap. Its way faster and not that expensive. Most sporting good stores have them.

I second it. I have seen people come into scottys who did that and still picked up the cap. Something about plastic and screws.

My SM and Nils don't have the screw vent.

Why not just slip the 0-ring over the screw head?

Yes, you'll need and O-ring that is gas/oil resistant.

The O-ring I used wasn't hurt by gas in the few days it was on there. But I realized the leak in my tank couldn't be fixed so I ordered a new tank, and it came with a new cap, so that's moot.

Capt., there's a small clip attached to the end of the screw inside the gas cap. You just pop the clip off and the screw backs all the way out easily. I wasn't sure from your post whether you'd already pulled that clip or not when you tried backing it out.

I havent taken the screw out yet. I do see what you are talking about CatFish, but I'm thinking I am just going to spend the 5 bucks and get a cap. Thanks for the help guys

I ended up getting a new cap as well when the o-ring on mine cracked. I was over tightening it, so I've taken it easy on the next cap and have had no issues thus far. It was still under warranty from Strikemaster so I ended up getting the cap for nothing.

Yes sir fits like the old one. Did you and Todd get your contest questions answered?

My cap is shot, and has been for couple years. I just don't put alot of gas in it. Old Strike Master works like a charm once old gas is out.

Capt.Blaine,

Be careful when you back the vent screw, I think it's held in with an E clip. (looks like a letter C with two or three nubs on the inside of it, will be on the end of the vent screw)

Take that off the INSIDE of the cap first, then the screw should come out easily.

The clip keeps the screw from coming out while the vent is open.

Cpt Blaine, I got a new cap last year for my SM that doesn't have a screw to mess with or a cap gasket to shrink and fall out either. I don't know where the guy got it, but it works SOOOO nice that I threw away the old metal cap, as well as the newer black cap with the screw. No leaks, no turning screw, no problem. Has a one way vent valve built in. If you want I'll go back and find out any details as my buddy asked about it too. Maybe we're on to something here??? I have no monetary interest, but I'm sure sold on it.

Yeah, Barracuda!!!

Please find out where those caps came from. The caps on both of my augers are junk and they leak gas and I am always getting gas on my hands just before I reach for a minnow!!

Thanks Alot!!!!!!

I think that explains a lot, fishmaster. grin.gifgrin.gif

But I'd be interested in that gas cap, too.

Gas or no gas those fish are scared when they hear the Fishmaster's a comin'!!!!!! Like ominous storm clouds on the horizon or an air raid siren howling in the distance like a crescendo-the sound of my name is sheer terror to fish!!!! cool.gif

Yes, I'm quite certain you're right. Their immediate flight to the far corners of Burntside explains why you catch so few of them, Fishmaster. grin.gifgrin.gif

Dang, I did it again!!!! Left the screw loose. On the other auger of course which doesn't have the new style cap with no screw. So when I got home and the wheel house smelled like gas, I went right away and got another cap. If anyone's interested, it's Tecumseh original service part no. 410280. Only way to go and < $7 ! Sort of like auto headlights...don't have to worry about turning them on or off. Automatically vents and seals. If you can't find a place nearby that carries them, call Dick at Trail Cycle in Forest Lake. I sa he had a few more and he said he'd mail to anyone that wants one.

JustinG,

I cannot believe that you didn't have any spelling errors in the above comment since you'd likely blow a 75 (minimum) on a breathalyzer for not only writing it, but thinking anyone could believe it!! \:\)

Ohhhh....ok. The contest that ran on June 28 from 5am to 9 am. The day you got the mail box photo in the Angler...yup, you got me on that day!!! cry.gif

You and your stipulations!!!! I still have you beat!!!! I would have had you beat in the Walleye contest too, but your goofy stipulations stated: "No Walleye entered in the contest can be caught in a 14' Alumacraft boat" sheesh. Talk about sneaky!!! \:o

JustinG,

Hey man, the only stipulation in the Walleye contest that I thrashed you in, were the fish be caught in Minnesota!! \:\)

Just because I wouldn't give in to your stipulation that it include the Arctic Circle and Amazon River, is not a reason to declare the contest null and void!

Finally, I could not believe that you tried to pass off that hybrid Burbot/Sucker combo you created in your lab in the basement as an entry. \:o

Hmmm, now that I think about that "fish", it had an eerie resemblance to you. grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

JustinG,

I hope it works for you. But save your receipt just in case. I tried the new cap on my newer Strikemaster today and the threads didn't seem to fit right. My older Strikemaster had the metal cap and the new screwless cap replaced it with perfect fit. But with my other newer auger with the black plastic cap w/metal screw, the screwless cap didn't seem to have same threads and didn't fit well. Not sure if we had stripped the threads or what, but maybe the thread patterns are different and can't use that screwless cap on all augers? So hopfully I didn't oversell this thing!

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
