Garrison Report

The wife and I rented from Garrison Sports and stayed overnight on Thursday despite not so good fish reports. The wife landed a nice 26" walleye on a buckshot rattle at 9pm. This was her largest walleye by far and her excitement was fun to see. At 10pm I landed a 24" walleye on a rainbow minnow/rattle wheel. We missed several others on rattle wheels thru the nite but had a good time.

The reason I rent thru Kari at Garrison Sports is he doesn't give me any b.s. on how the fishing bite is.

The wife had a blast and I know I'll be going back to rent from him again in the future.

Have not heard many reports from the west side, how were the conditions out of Garrison? Good to hear you had some action.

I was up this week. on weds night it was cold enough that a couple cracks opened up. one looked to be just west of Garrison Reef, and the other was further out. Call Kari at Garrison sports and he'll know if they healed up yet. he's still not pulling houses past the first break as of thursday...

Me, too...do a lot of the Brainerd Tourney people head to Mille Lacs before/after? Will it be insanely busy?

Will be calling G Sports to get an update later today...

Just returned from 4 days of fishing with no success to report minus the ice is starting to shape up real good! Wednesday found 11-14 inches off the roads, and the last hole I drilled on Sunday I measured 18. Not sure of how far Kari had road out on the nw side, but if your looking to get on mud, Barnacles along with Myr Mar both have some roads open to the mud. I have used both and would recommend Barnacles to anyone! They definetly had put some miles on there plow trucks this year, and have alot of snow moved! Wish I had a positive report of the fishing, but do not...Baby perch constantly floatin up in the holes, many eye's and some nice perch on camera but not takers!

talked to garrison sports this am...they are pulling to garrison reef. there is a crack beyond that they aren't sure if it's healed up or not. I'm going to put my house on the reef this weekend!!! YAHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! beats only being 150 yards out like last week!! better than not being on the ice at all though!!

whats up with Mille Lacs this year? We usually head up there every year (annual thing) but this year we are planning to go elsewhere do to poor reports. I know resorts depend on fishing along with other winter sports financially but it must hurt a little when the bite is poor. The last couple years we have been mislead that the bite was good until we were there. Then everyone we talked to was saying how slow it has been. Like fisherking32 said, he goes with the one that doesnt feed him a line of [PoorWordUsage]. Too bad there are some on here that are here strictly for financial reasons. To follow that up, there are definately a lot of posters who will straight shoot you too. Gotta love the pond when its hot though!!!

if you want the real truth on how the bite is call Jay at wilderness warmth,he will give it to straight because he is also a fisherman who also doesnt like B.S. about fishing reports.if its slow he will tell you it's slow.good luck and let's hope the bite picks up.

Of course everyone goes to Mille Lacs for the fishing, but one thing to remember is there are plenty of other things to keep both the boys and girls busy if the fish are not so cooperative! Depeneding on what side of the lake your on, there seems to always be some sort of live music at most any of the resorts or bars on any given weekend nite. There are 100's of miles of groomed snowmobile trails at your finger tips! Pick a direction and go! Heck if your into that thing, I would even recomnend taking a tour of the Native American Musuem they got there on the sw side! Looks intresting from the road, prolly even more so on the inside? I dont support tribe run casino's but once again that seems to be a place that gathers quite a few people! I've even found myself out on a back country road just out for a cruise trying to spot wildlife! Lets all face it, the entire lake area is a sportsman paradise! If you dont think so, then my question to you is what are you doing there? My experience of Mille Lacs is like life, it has its ups and its downs!

See ya on the ice!

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
