Anyone been down to the shore lately? I spent a few hours down there last weekend, and ended up with two loopers and two coho's. Just wondering if anyone else has had any luck.

Nothing dooin' for me, in the last 2 weeks I have had the chance to spend 2 afternoons at the French & nothing hit my Crawler bits.

Not many fishermen there when I was, so that was telling... Nice to get out though with a newborn at home... \:D

Tommorow its Finland for some streamers...

All of my fish were on bugs. Didn't get any action on crawlers. I did see some fish rolling, so theres a few around. Already looking better than last season.

Bdog, welcome to the site! You've started what may become another monster thread. Sure to stay up on the 'front page' for a few months anyways.

I dined on fresh loopie yesterday. I'm almost out though. Heard of a handful of fish caught at French and Lester back when the temps were a bit higher. Mine came from the French and also on the bug. Gonna be too cold to head to the shore for a while.

I did some fly fishing out in front of the french during the warm spell. I hooked one nice fish, but that was it. It did feel good to have a fly rod in my hand again.

You guys should be up there right now! Although it is a long ways to go to get skunked. Just kidding. Hope you guys get some pigs. Bdog, I hear ya! Work was killing me last night and enough was enough. I clocked out and said seeya later! Time to sit inside all weekend (where it's warm) and sort gear for steelie season. Two months and it's on.

I don't fish much with spoons so I can't help ya too much there. If you were set on throwing spoons though I'm guessing you'd get better results later as the fish concentrate more by the rivers. We might be out there with jigging spoons soon though! With these bitter cold temps we might get iced up again and have some good hard water action near town. The sheet looked pretty good and if the wind doesn't kick up too much it'll happen. As far as open water though I just have too much confidence in crawlers on bottom and bobbers and bugs on top.

I'll be at burntside, but it looks like we might have some ice to get out on shortly after I get back.

Blaine, Bdog tells me you had quite the trip to Canada. Tough to drill a hole in Fish Lake after that trip, eh?

It was pretty warm out yesterday...somebody has to have a report from the shore! Unfortunately, I don't have one. I did find some time to make some more bobbers in hopes of getting out soon though. Bdog maybe we should start tying bugs at work too???

Matt, you wouldn't have to make more if you'd get your purse! confused.gif you should have an email.

Report, fine. I went up in the afternoon off the French. Threw a bobber around with a bug and waxie. A small handfull of guys out there, most everyone floating crawlers. I did see one fish landed on the south side of the river mouth, 6lbs or so. The guy who caught that one yelled to someone that 7 or 8 fish had been caught there yesterday. Also saw a couple of fly boys wade right out in the flow and start zinging rods, they sounded like some awfully overexerted casts. It's getting kind of sad that when i go looper fishing, catching is not even on my mind. Success is so low, it's just something to do outside

Those fly boys were Illtakewhaticanget (Porter) and RodNGun. They didn't get anything.

I know that RodNGun was borrowing my Winston XTR 8 weight, which is a super fast powerful rod, but can be very challenging to cast if you're used to a more moderate action rod. I was just upset I couldn't be out there with em. Especially now that I'm sitting inside and it's 50 below wind chill outside. crazy.gif

Launched off the beach in Burlington Bay on Sunday went 6-9 with 3 Kings, 2 Coho, and 1 Looper. It was great to be on the water! Don't try it if you don't have a roller trailer.

Sounds like a [PoorWordUsage] of a day for this time of the year. Kind of regretting putting the old Lund away for the year. Gotta find something to occupy my time til I can get into 10C next year and shoot all those monster bucks you've been seeing.

Some days crawlers are hands down the ticket but I get most of my action off bugs tipped with waxies under a hothand bobber (North Shore Tackle Co.). This time of year there's not a lot of competition on the shore so I prefer to take up some space and throw out one bottom rig with crawler and one bobber/bug rig and let the fish tell me what they want that particular day.

Hey FishingRealtor,

How deep were you fishing and how far from shore?

Possible to get a few casting from the breakwall?

But real bugs don't have seductive marabou on them. Besides, doesn't anyone know that all that stuff is just supposed to mimic a flatfish? X4 to be presise.

I've caught more Looper's and Coho's on brown and black bugs than anything. They always seem to produce. Though I have never tried them in the fall due to all my time being consumed chasing swamp bucks, I have used bugs from December to April with good success. I always throw a crawler or spawn bag off of the bottom just to cover more area, and do catch some fish on them, but bugs seem to catch more fish, for me anyway. I know some guys who swear by spoons or spinners, casting form shore, and I have also done well trolling stickbaitsin the boat.

Sorry death your right i don't have any bugs that look and shake like the x-4. But i can get hissing cockroaches online that might be close grin.gif. Wow i just got a great idea confused.gif. What the heck is a looper bug made to look like anyway?

Hello I Got One,

We spent most of the day in 60-100 feet of water, we did make one trolling pass by the breakwall... caught one small Coho. If you use the search function on this forum, you will find all kinds of info about the T.H. Breakwall.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
