Any reports coming out of Appeldoorns lately? Looking at renting a house in a couple of weeks. Just wondering what all going on. The main thing I'm wondering is how far the roads go out to! Just trying to figure somethings out.

The bite has been a tough one for the last week. It finally started to pick up yesterday with some nice perch being taken out of the deeper water off of Doe Island Reef and 2 Mile Gravel.

The Walleye bite started to pick up yesterday evening and then again early this a.m.

Here are a couple of photos from a Paul Bosch

I just check the forcast for that weekend and it looks like it is going to pretty cold that week and weekend. Hopefully the weather stays a little consistant to keep the fish active!

Just got back from Appleldorns, To say the least no fish for us. Not a hit either night in the house and a few small perch during the day. Went around during the day Sat and saw lots of fish on the camera, but not takers. Talked to Paul on my way out this morning and said it has been slow and that a few houses have had some luck. Hope it turns on for you guys as your trip comes near. Report back and let us know.

Hey Paul,

How is the ice up there? Are all the houses out there now and if so, how far out? I have the new big one reserved in a few weeks, will it be out?

With the cold coming in, it should really thicken things up.

We were up this weekend. Things were slow, we managed a few small perch during the day but had to work for them. Others in our group did catch jumbos, just not very many. The largest couple of perch caught were 12". There were also a few eyes caught, ranging from 20"-26". Nothing under 20 to my knowledge.

We even saw a few eyes on the camera, unfortunately for us the perch hatch had them less than interested and were well fed.

Guys who left the main houses and moved to deeper structures in their portables around 26-30' did have a great time on jumbos, but they stayed mobile and didn't just hole up in the shacks.

The hospitality of Appledoorns was top notch, we'll be back, thanks Paul.

Chris,

We have had all of our houses out since 12/26. The big one is sitting out on a small rock pile a mile out from the resort.

The report doesn't look very promising right now, it has to get better going forward, right?? Any chance of navigating a wheeler off of the plowed roads? How is the slush?

Hey Paul,

are people driving on the ice with cars? Do you plan on moving anything in the next few weeks?

I was up over the weekend and put over 30 miles on my ATV, a few slush pockets but nothing 4WD could not get me threw. It was all getting pretty hard as far as I could see. Saw all types of vehicals on the lake!

ok I do know where that is. I was just making sure. So that is right next to Wahkon pretty much. We are going out of Walleye Dundee's. \:\( Haven't had any luck on the eyes, only perch.

Anyone else on the lake in Dundee's or jj's area having any luck?

Its nice to get this cold weather to harden everything up, but sounds like if suppose to be a little warmer by the weekend of the 25-27. Which will be nice for moving around during the day time!

Don't have to give exact details but where are some good places over in that area. We are in a 219 to 20 foot hole to the west of the first island. We hae only been there for a week but it has not produced anything yet.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
