Gunflint area ice

1 post in this topic

Hit Pike lake, Carbou and Elbow lakes. For the most part, awefull ice conditions. Found that the wind blown ( east side ) was the worst for slush. Pretty concident through the lakes was - 2 inches crust, 8 to 10 inches of slush, then 6 to 8 of just ok ice. !!! The middles of the lakes where a bit better, with next to no slush and about 10 inches of just ok ice. travel with a wheeler was very tough and scary at times. I actually went through a few feet from shore a couple of times, some shore areas had no ice under the snow and slush!!!

The fishing was very slow !!!!!!!!!!!!

Be smart - be safe

Thanks for the info everyone. And Borch that is good to know too.  I try to spend 2-3 hours looking on cedar each trip, but It's a lot of water to break down , and having only been out hardwater cattin 6 times so far I still have a lot to learn.  Generally I spend a lot of my 3 hours losing confidence and then wind up at the meth hole to catch a few .  Putting in the work is what makes it so fun once it all comes together though!

Friday night until about 9:00 they were aggressive as heck, and jigging worked very well.  It seemed like after that they didn't want much to do with jigging, and the set lines were key.
