New to the area (Hastings) and need some pointers

1 post in this topic

We moved up to Hastings from the Chicago area last year. Last winter was too hectic, so I never had the time to get out ice fishing. This year I am making the time. One of the pains of moving to a new area is you don't know where to start looking for fish. I am hoping someone can give me some pointers on what lakes/rivers I should be looking at in the Hastings area for some quick fishing. At this point I am not even picky on the kind of fish. I just would like to get out and catch some fish (kids have been bugging me too).

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I crossed over to the dark side of smallies about 15 years ago. Mostly chase pannies in winter but used to chase eyes a few times on the hard water each season.   I could post a ton of pics if you need more proof.

Sorry to make you hold up a bottom feeder, but we needed to see it!

I was up over the weekend and my shoreline was getting pretty sketchy.  Had a pocket of open water down the shore about a 100 yards. Where I could see the bottom in two to three feet of water.  Walked out about a hundred yards and popped four holes Saturday afternoon. There was 17- 18.5"s of ice in those four holes. Looking at the forecast I can't see the ice sticking around too much longer.  The holes I popped had 5-6" of pretty mushy cloudy stuff on top and about 12"s of pretty solid stuff underneath it.
