Nestor Falls/Sioux Narrows

3 posts in this topic

Anybody been up in this area yet this winter? We're heading there next week and are trying to find out what the ice is like on Whitefish Bay. So far haven't been able to find any ice reports.

Thanks for any help or direction to someone/place that would know!

HI F.F.,

THEY ARE FISHING NESTOR FALLS, BUT AS OF LAST WEEKEND, THEY ARE ONLY GOING BY SLED OR 4 WHEELER. CRAPPIE FISHING IS EXCELLENT., AS FOR WHITEFISH BAY, CAN'T HELP YOU THERE, HOWEVER I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT MOST TROUT LAKES DID NOT FREEZE BEFORE ALL THE SNOW WE GOT, BUT NOW HAVE FROZE WHICH COULD MAKE FOR GOOD ICE LATER.

SINCERELY,

FISHMEISTER

FF,

I wish I could give you a report first hand, but I have not been able to get out yet.

All reports that I'm getting here at the bait shop and talking to guys fueling their sleds up is that it is very very slushy and the ice is not great. No pickup travel for quite some time, but it is manageable on sleds. This is for the Kenora area of LOTW, and not Whitefish Bay. I'm meeting with a guy later today from Sioux Narrows. I will see if he's been out and about.

Lots of water and slush on the ice yesterday. Ice wasn't as thick as I thought it'd be either.  Spot I was on I marked 13".  Ended up not driving all the way to where I was going and glad I did. Walked about 1/3 mile.  Caught some perch, gills, and a 14.5" eye. Saw some larger marks moving through when I caught the 14 but just sniffers. I was in 20' bottom of a break with some deeper water near and weeds not far.

It's true, people were driving out on the river yesterday, but the ice is melting quickly and the current has picked up.  The snow cover is gone and there is about 1" to 2'' of standing water.  This extended warm weather has me worried.   Personally, I think vehicle traffic is "Iffy" now.  Be careful.

The webcam has been running for a few days now. I was watching it on and off all day yesterday and saw a fair number of vehicles going on and off the lake. But I haven't seen anything yet this morning. I was thinking about going out tomorrow, but I'm starting to get a bit nervous. I may call Harty's this afternoon and see what they say.
